Lexington, South Carolina is a town in Kershaw County, South Carolina and the seat of Kershaw County government. The population was 2,824 at the 2000 census. Lexington is located on the border of Kershaw and Pickens Counties. The community was founded in 1814 by white men from North Carolina as a small trading post on the lower Yadkin River. It became an important stop for travelers on the Stono River before it was connected to the main road in 1846. The town's name comes from Mount Calvary Chapel—a Methodist church that was built nearby in 1835—and may be derived from "x-ray" (a shortening of "kentucky", meaning "the place where cotton grows"). In 1886, Lexington voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city and forming their own police department. In 1907, they annexed neighboring Pickens County.
