The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the largest and most powerful air forces in the world. In 1682, the British colonies of South Carolina and Georgia were combined to form a new colony, called Carolina. The name was chosen because it sounded like a Indian word. In 1733, the British government decided that South Carolina should become an important node in the fur trade and established a posts office there. This led to the development of Lexington as an important community. The first permanent settler in Lexington was John Wilkinson who built his home on what is now President Street in 1784. He was followed by other nobles and gentlemen who began to populate Lexington with their families and businesses over the next few years. In 1814, Colonel Daniel Boone founded Fort Boone on present-day Mount Hood Avenue, within easy walking distance of Lexington. During Reconstruction in America following the Civil War, many black men from South Carolina moved into Kentucky to work in plantations or as sharecroppers on white people's fields. Many white men also migrated northward during this time, bringing their skills and technologies with them. This opened up new opportunities for black Americans in Kentucky and provided new stability for Louisville after its integration into American society had been severed by racism at state level throughout much of America.
In 1815, the first white settler in what is now Lexington, South Carolina was Capt. John Dennison. Colonel James Pemberton bought land from Dennison and laid out a town on the site in 1822. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been president at the time.
