Lancaster, South Carolina is a town located in Lancaster County, South Carolina. The population was 5,838 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The town was founded by planters from North Carolina in 1827 as a market for goods brought down the Savannah River by boat. By 1830, Lancaster had become a county seat and had a population of 10,000. The first courthouse in Lancaster was built in 1832 and served until 1868 when it burned down. In 1840, two brothers named Jameson built a gristmill on what is now called Old Mill Road which became one of the most important commercial centers in Lancaster County. By 1850, there were over 20 mills and 2 churches in Lancaster with a total population of 30,000. In 1861, Confederate General Pee Wee Crayton camped near Lancaster while he tried to move his army southward to attack Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Fort Sumter. On July 12th of that year (1861), Confederate General Braxton Bragg arrived at Lancaster and ordered the burning of all noncombatant property here within 24 hours or he would personally burn any buildings found! In 1865, after the Civil War ended+, Lancaster's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing due to increased trade with neighboring states such as Georgia and South Carolina.. In 1890/91 (the end of Reconstruction Era), an electric light plant was established here which helped increase commerce and industry throughout much of central Charleston then southern Kershaw County during this time period also gave rise to new suburban development around town center over these years leading up to its current form today including streets named "Avenue" or "Downtown", several large shopping malls north of town center (Mallory Square Mall being perhaps the most recent) as well as numerous small businesses providing employment opportunities for locals day & night without having to leave their homes... etc etc etc...
