In 1835, Lancaster voted to secede from Richland County and become its own separate city under the new state government. The town had been growing rapidly but it had still not reached its full potential because it lacked good transportation options or easily accessible water supplies which made farming possible only for a few select families while making travel difficult for most people other than those living near the river or mill sites which developed around these mills/machines which allowed production year-round without interruption or danger to humans or animals
