The Lancaster, South Carolina Army Garrison was the first military installation in the area. The Garrison was established on December 6, 1810 as a result of a congressional act that authorized the erection of an army in South Carolina. It was moved to its present location on May 1, 1861 after Confederate forces burned government buildings in Lancaster. The Garrison continued to serve as an army installation until it closed on July 1, 1865. During its time as an army garrison, the Lancaster Army Garrison Headquarters and Armory were used for storage and for provisioning troops during the American Civil War. After the Civil War ended, most of the garrison remained inactive until it reopened on November 5, 1886 as part of preparations for annexation by Texas into the United States. TheArmy Garrison closed again on October 15, 1901 following World War I. It reopened again on October 3, 1902 as part of preparations for World War II. The Garrison served until it closed permanently on September 26, 1945. Today there are few remaining remnants of the former Lancaster Army Garrison including barracks and grounds still used by active duty troops and their families. However, there is also considerable evidence that this garrison played a significant role in developing Lancaster into a major city during Reconstruction- both through its activities within town government and through its support of local businesses and industries which grew out of military connections with surrounding counties.
