Irmo is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The Irmo post office was established in 1872 and discontinued in 1971. The first settler in Irmo was James Fenton, who arrived on July 3, 1871. He built a cabin on the banks of the Saluda River. In 1875, Fenton purchased land east of Irmo and began to cultivate it. In 1878, he erected a two-story wooden frame house known as "Fenton's First Home." In 1886, Fenton married Sarah Jane Cates and moved to Irmo with her. They had four children: James (1887-1951), Clara Mae (1888-1972), Alonzo (1890-1964) and Mary Alice (1892-1976). In 1901, when Fenton became president of Spartanburg County Agricultural Society, he donated 2 acres of land west of Irmo for school purposes. On November 3 that year, the town charter was adopted by the citizens of Spartanburg County with Atherton as its first mayor. A new courthouse was built on this site in 1907 and named for Mrs. Fenton—a unique honor because she could not attend the dedication ceremony herself due to health reasons laid out by her husband when he became president seven years earlier: "She has been too busy taking care of our boys down at Monkey Island to be able to make it down to Spartanburg." It served as county courthouse until 1952 when a new courthouse was built northeast of town on US 276 across from Old Fort Hill Cemetery which still stands today! Mrs. Fenton died in 1925 after many years including many months spent living at Old Fort Hill Cemetery while her boys were attending high school nearby in neighboring Greenville! Mr. Fenton continued living there until his death in 1951! In 1927 Drury Chapel opened its doors giving hope back into small towns across America following World War I; however within 5 years it closed due largely to lack of donations from irmonesters . . .
