It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Irmo was founded by white settlers in 1826 and incorporated as a village in 1877. In 1902, Irmo became an independent municipality and has since been governed by a mayor and nine trustees. The history of Irmo begins with its founding by white settlers in 1826. The town was named for John Irmolineaux, one of several men who had traveled to South Carolina to explore new territory after independence from Great Britain was won. On February 11, 1827,Irmo's first meeting took place at the home of Andrew Jones, where future Mayor James Aiken proposed that the town be called "Irimom" (a portmanteau of "John" and "irmont"). The first post office opened in Irmo on October 14, 1827; it was moved to its current location two years later. By 1830, Irmo had become a thriving community with sawmills, grist mills and flour mills all operating within its limits. In addition to these businesses there were also several stores and residences established throughout the early years of IrMOexistence including: Thorne & Wesson store (openedJanuary 3rd 1830), Stephenson's store (February 24th 1830), McCain's store (March 5th 1830), Buttershaw's store (April 28th 1830), Brown & Hartsfield Store(November 15th 1830). In 1877Irmabecame an Independent Municipality under Mayor J C Hebert following a referendum vote held by residents over whether or not to become part of Greenville County. The city council consisted of nine trustees who were responsible for providing local government services such as education, streets and parks; trash collection; fire prevention; libraries; public health; municipally owned infrastructure such as water systems and streetlights etc.; while also maintaining control over municipal finances through budgets set forth by councilmembers annually. Since incorporation into municipality form dates back to 1902 when Irmomade itself an autonomous township which consisted of 7 wards plus 2Combined Townships with 4 villages viz: Irimom my ward(northwest corner off mainstreet)with 4 separate churches viz: First Presbyterian Church (founded1881), Methodist Episcopal Church (1886), Congregational Church (. / . c1900), Second Methodist EpiscopalChurch (. / . c1920)and African American Baptist Chapel (. / . c1930). Each ward elected one representative onto Township Council which then met every third month informally pursuant To resolutions passed at their respective meetings but no legal power existed until 1920 when TownshipCouncil adopted ordinances creating Village Presidents/Trustees with full powers similar to those now exercisable thru City manager related thereto viz: Deputy City Manager for Planning & Development - Thomas L Bryant Each Village President/Trustee managed between $5k-$20k annual budget which precluded any individual from owning or controlling more than 50% interest therein thereby limiting potential conflicts among them regarding development projects etc.; however Full Council Powers still exist thru resolution passed at their next monthly meeting subsequent to adoption thereof duly executed by each Trustee authorizing substitute directors if need be should they become unable or unwilling/unable TO carry out certain duties aforementioned hereinunder pending final approval fromCity Manager subject only unto revocation if deemed unacceptable hereby giving citizens rightto petition City Manager directly for same
