Irmo is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Irmo was founded in 1871 by Captain John C. Irmo and his family as a post office called "Red Springs". The name was changed to "Irmo" in 1893. The Irmonese were among the early settlers in Spartanburg County and were influential in local politics and business. In 1881, Captain John C. Irmo donated land for the town of Irmo on which the present town hall and several other buildings were built. The first Post Office building was constructed in 1895; it was replaced by the current structure in 2000. In 1912, irMONEsE established a railroad line through Irmo and nearby Lincolnton that became known as the Spartanburg & Emory Railroad Company Limited. This rail line served as an important transportation corridor for agricultural goods from rural areas to larger cities such as Charleston and Greensboro; it also supported some industrial productions such as tanning operations. However, after World War II this railroad line fell into disuse and has been inactive since its closure in 1966. In 1964, irMONEsE decided to construct a new high school for their students withinirMO's boundaries; this decision led to much speculation about what would become of irMONEsE's original high school site when it no longer functioned as a high school or whether it would be used for another purpose entirely (such as housing). In October 2006, construction began on what is now known as "The Broadwalk", an open-air mall located across from irMONEsE's old high school site.
