Irmo is a town in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Fayetteville-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1816 by Captain John Irms and his wife Sarah, who came overland from Georgia. Captain Irms named the town for his father-in-law, Reuben McDowell. The first store in Irmo opened in 1819. In 1830, Irmo had a post office and mail service with Atlanta. The town saw some growth during the 1840s when it became an important transportation center on the Pee Dee River because of its location near Mobile Bay. By 1860, Irmo had a school and several stores. However, during the American Civil War, most of Irmo sided with Confederate General Robert Ewell and were destroyed by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant's command as he advanced southward through McCormick County towards Lynchburg。 In 1865, after Reconstruction ended following the US Civil War, Irmo reverted to its original name of Reuben McDowell Township which continued to exist until 1971 when it was merged into Greenville Township
