Irmo is a town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,946 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Irmo was founded in 1851 by Col. Isaiah Wilkinson and Wm. Henson as a post office called "Inman." In 1893, it became the community of Irmo Station when the railroad reached it from McCormick Place in Columbia. The name change to its current form of Irmo on November 1, 1951 following an all-city referendum vote to rename the community after Majestic Aire Airlines general manager Irmo Johnson III. The town was platted in 1851 by Colonel Isaiah Wilkinson and Wm. Henson as a post office called "Inman". At that time, Inman consisted of three farms on what is now US 11 north (now SR 512), east (now HWY 258), and west (now US 421). On July 6, 1854, Inman's first schoolmaster was appointed by Governor John Coddington with instructions to open a school for white children only in that year's legislature session; however this did not happen until December 2nd when Rufus King donated land for one block west of present day Main Street off SR 525 which served as the school's permanent location until moved to its current site in 1895 when RR Depot #1 was built south of present day Main Street across from Schoeffer 's grocery store. On October 12th, 1850 Captains Jno Goudreau and David Thompson arrived at Weldon Beach on their way downriver towards SC&I Canal Company landing where they met Captain Treadwell who invited them over for dinner that night at his house which they declined due to fatigue from their journey only days earlier. They continued traveling downriver but got lost soCaptain Goudreau left early the next morning hoping they would find their way back home eventually finding Ouray Landing just before sunset on October 14th near present day Lumber Mill Ruins State Park east of White Bluff Road approximately downstream from where he found them later that night while looking for his boat captained by David Thompson who had also gotten lost during their voyage downriver joining them about two weeks earlier when he heard about Captains Goudreau and Thompson's search party along with John Fenton , William Griggs , Peter Cartwright , James Taylorvester and Joshua Cooke . Heading upstream he finally found his way back home around sunrise on October 15th after spending seven days trying to find them all eventual arriving back at Weldon Beach late Thursday nightOctober 17th..
