In 1896, the State Militia was reorganized and became the 1st Regiment Columbia Volunteer Infantry. That same year, Army troops arrived to help with Reconstruction following the American Civil War. A barracks and arsenal were erected on what is now Depot Square inIrmo,and a small school was built for soldiers and their families. The 1st Regiment Columbia Volunteer Infantry served in various engagements during World War I before being demobilized at Camp Lee near Raleigh in November 1918. However, it wasn’t until 1922 that Irmo received its own regiment of infantry – the 2nd/5th Brigade Columbia Infantry ( later redesignated as 2nd/9th Brigade). It was here that Irmo’s military history began to take shape as a community with its own garrison and unit. In 1940, when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, all remaining Confederate troops were mustered out of service and placed into local civilian society under control of newly appointed General Order No. 8-A which read “All officers not holding commissions or having enlisted more than six months are to be discharged without pay or benefit from this army until further notice” As part of Reconstruction efforts by both North and South after the Civil War, African Americans were given access to education and employment opportunities through federal programs known as “Redemption Bill” legislation which provided financial assistance for former slaves living among whites throughout southern states including Irmo. Irmo, SC is a small town located in Richland County. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. Irmo is one of two towns in Richland County that were founded as post-offices in 1826. It became a full city in 1903. The first white settler in Irmo was John Jernigan, who arrived from Virginia on December 3, 1826. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office in Irmo opened on February 17, 1830, and was named for John Jernigan's father-in-law, Samuel Darlington. In 1836, the court ordered the closure of all but one school in Richland County because of financial problems caused by the Andrew Jackson administration's policies towards Native Americans. The only school open during this time was located in Sumterville (now Greenville). In 1840, an act were passed which provided for racially segregated schools withinRichland County limits; however, this policy did not take effect until after 1850 due to legal challenges brought against it by African Americans. In 1847–48, Ira Hanks built a sawmill on Reedy Creek near where Main Street now meets US 16. This mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses until it closed down around 1960s due to droughts and other economic factors. A new sawmill operatednearby from 1978 until its closure in 2003 due to weather conditions and vandalism incidents along with overloading of the equipment by operators trying to improve production rates; this led to a water shortage at the mill which shut down operations for about six weeks during 2003-2004 wintertime when temperatures averaged 50 degrees below zero F (-14 degrees Celsius). In 2006 an agreement was made between Irmo Township government authorities and Philo Companies LLC., owner ofStatewide Logging Inc., operator of Statewide Logging Company (SLI), allowing SLI to reopen Statewide Logging Company property adjacent to township boundaries with access rights for Irmo Township residents who have had their membership with SLI terminated since 2006 as part of SLI's transition plan from state run company into private company status under terms agreed upon by both township governments and Philo Companies LLC.; thus giving back land reclaimed from old Sligo Mill site established by original owners prior to 1968 when they sold land next door across US 16 from then on known as "The Mill Site." In return for these privileges no longer having access to township resources such as water or power through their memberships with SLI they agreed not To cut trees off road leading into village nor damage any infrastructure including power lines running past village limits without written consent obtained from township authorities; also agreement has been made that no logs will be taken off street leading into village without written consent obtained from township authorities after sunset every night regardless of temperature so long as there are no obstructions standing up taller than 6 feet above ground level . One reason why Irmo retains its distinction as being one of only two towns statewide that remain racially integrated today is because most people here still live close enough kinredge that interactions between black/white citizens are limited largely to basic needs such as grocery shopping or needs arising outOf natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes

Irmo was founded by planters from Georgia in 1820 and named for John Irwin, an Englishman who had come to America as a trader in the early 1800s. The town began to grow rapidly after it became a county seat in 1828. In 1835, Irmo was incorporated as a city and reached its peak of growth during the antebellum period. However, during the 1840s and 1850s Irmo experienced significant economic decline due to frontier warfare and political unrest. In 1860, Irmo seceded from South Carolina and joined Confederate States of America (CSA). After the war ended, Irmo continued to experience declined fortunes until it regained some late 19th century prosperity with the arrival of new waves of immigrants in the mid-19th century. By 1930, however, Irmo had lost most of its former post-war heyday and its population had shrunk below 1,000 people again since 1870
