Hilton Head Island, located in the southeastern corner of South Carolina and surrounded by salt water on three sides, was one of the most important points in early English history. The island was first called Tryon's Island after General James Tryon, who led a victorious military campaign against the Cherokee in 1813. The name was changed to Hilton Head after Rear Admiral John Hilton, who commanded American forces at Charleston during the siege of that city in 1779. The first permanent European settlers on Hilton Head Island were some African Americans who arrived from Georgia as indentured servants in 1802. They founded a plantation known as "Ebenezer" on what is now Old Point Comfort Road. After several years of success, however, this plantation failed because of lack of fertilizer and other inputs available on the island. In 1815 white men began to arrive on Hilton Head for religious reasons and to farm land around what is now downtown Ashley Beach. By 1830 there were 11 white people living on Hilton Head; by 1840 only six remained. In 1868 white men organized a hunting society known as "The Hunters" to hunt game on the island. This group became very successful and developed a strong trade with nearby Savannah (then called Kingsland) because they could purchase game fresh from the mainland without having it killed or processed into food products. Thanks to this trade, wealthy whites began arriving on Hilton Head for hunting trips every year beginning in the late 1860s until about 1890 when restrictions placed upon them by local authorities made hunting much more difficult than it had been before. During World War II many soldiers stationed at Fort Sumter came ashore for meals at Ashley Beach before going back onto their ships moored offshore for supplies and ammunition convoyed through Hampton Roads enroute to Okinawa or Japan; these sailors ate mostly seafood which they caught off-shore while their warships crossed over to provide naval gunfire support during World War II."
