The Hilton Head Island Naval Base is home to the USS Constitution (CV-2) and USS Hornet (CV-8). The Constitution was stationed on Hilton Head Island from 1898 until her decommissioning in 1945. From 1951 to 1957, the Hornets were based at NAS Jacksonville. In 1982, the Hornets were transferred to NAS Whiting Field, Alabama. The base closure of NAS Jacksonville in 1992 led to theINCIDENT at sea with Costa Concordia which resulted in a number of Navy ships being deployed to Hilton Head Island including USS Harry S Truman (CVN 73), USS John F Kennedy (CVN 78), and USS Nimitz(CVN 68). Since then, the island has been used for training purposes by both naval vessels and Marines. In 1999, an installation was constructed for Marine forces called Camp Will Rogers located on Anseannie Road just south of Roosevelt Roads intersection. This is home to three battalions of Marines as well as a detachment of Navy Seals. It is also home to Headquartersmarine Corps Forces Europe headquartered at ESCAPE Point under commandant Major General Edwin P. Anderson who oversees all European deployments within Marine Corps Forces Europe(MCFE). On May 25th 2009, during Operation Neptune’s Spear - NATO’s largest maritime operation since World War II - HMS Ark Royal arrived off Hilton Head Island with 5 Commando Brigade support units embarked for Exercise Talisman Sabre 2009/10 which reinforces UK defence commitments in North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea following attacks against diplomatic missions abroad by gunmen aboard cruise liners Laopera and Migrante These exercises are part of Atlantic Resolute Force2010 program that provides UK Defence with capabilities necessary both regionally and globally

The island was first inhabited by the Arawaks, who lived there for over two centuries. In 1565, English explorer John Lawson discovered the island and named it after Lord Admiral of England Francis Hilton, 1st Viscount Camden. The island became a dependency of Jamaica in 1814 and was made a separate British Crown colony in 1898. The population of Hilton Head Island peaked at over 20,000 in 1950, but has since declined to around 12,000 today. The history of Hilton Head Island can be traced back to the time before Europeans arrived on the island. Hittites had been living on the island for years before they were displaced by other groups. Archaeological evidence suggests that there have been human settlements on Hilton Head Island as early as 9600 BC. During this time period, Hilton Head was part of the Kingdom of Dahomey which was ruled by a large number of king’s vassals. After being expelled from their kingdom during an uprising against their king (ca 1150-1300), the Dahomey people moved to Hispaniola where they built their first permanent homes. It is interesting to note that this group did not adopt any European practices such as architecture or clothing until much later when they encountered Europeans again and began to adopt these practices because they felt that they were under attack from their former allies. Eventually, contact between Europe and Africa occurred through merchants travelling between Spain and Africa via Madagascar (and India). One such merchant named Christopher Columbus met a group of Indians on one such journey in 1492 while he was trying to find his way back home after discovering America! Upon encountering land that he thought could be America – although he had never seen anything like it – Columbus naming it “Jamaica” rather than just “America” because he didn’t want anyone else confused with him! This event helped spur exploration throughout Southeast Asia which eventually led to Europe discovering new lands including Australia! With so many new discoveries happening all at once, it is no wonder that some people believe that Christopher Columbus actually landed on what is now known as Hilton Head Island! When Britain acquired control of Jamaica following its victory over France during World War II, they decided that what remained of Haiti should also become part of Jamaica too! As a result, much construction took place on both islands due to preparations for independence; however, nothing came about as planned because Haitians refused to leave their homeland without their land Additionally, many Americans who had fled war-torn countries ended up moving permanently into Statedepartmental Areas (SDA) during this time period due to lack of opportunity or choice elsewhere within society! Although SDA designation served certain purposes such as providing protection from mob violence or taxes during tough times - many residents found themselves living above poverty lines thanks largely to government largesse!! Although Statedepartmental Areas were intended only for American citizens – many local Jamaicans continued working off-island jobs even after returning home ! Many high-ranking officials also chose notto flee Hurricane Irma/Johnnie Cochran while it raged outside !! Consequently , most current residents are descendants or heritage membersof those who originally live here !!
