Hilton Head Island is a small, isolated island located in the Atlantic Ocean about 620 miles from Charleston, South Carolina. The island has a population of only around 1800 people and it is home to two hospitals, one which provides care for naval personnel and their families as well as other medical facilities, and the other which is used by civilians injured or killed in accidents on the mainland. Hilton Head Island also offers a number of recreational opportunities including swimming, fishing, golfing, hiking and boat rentals. The first Europeans to visit Hilton Head Island were French military officers who arrived in 1719. They named the island after John Fenton Hilton (1711-1792), an English nobleman who had interests on the mainland. In 1802, BritishCaptain James Cook charted what would become Hilton Head Island while sailing for England. He named it HMS Beagle because he thought that it resembled an animal called a beagle that he had seen on his voyage around the world. Hilton Head was originally part of what was known as Stono Bay Parish until 1845 when it became part of Beaufort County. The first permanent settler on Hilton Head was Captain JamesONeill (1771-1849) who built his house at Port Royal on present day Hilton Head Island in 1804. He was followed by Commodore George Pickering (1810-1865) who built Fort Pickering near present day Georgetown and developed land around it into what is now downtown Beaufort. Held back by Native American warriors until ceded to Britain in 1783 during the Treaty of Paris following America's victory over France in the Revolutionary War, Beaufort County rapidly grew with slave trade activity based there developing into one of North Carolina's largest cotton plantations by 1830 when blacks began coming to live there as slaves under white indentured servitude contracts known as "peculiar bonds." In 1860s black northerners seeking refuge from southern violence started arriving here seeking freedom from African Americans living under white rule throughout most of America through such programs as " Entrance tickets to Liberia" or " Cutlass boats for colored passengers." This influx led to increasing racial tension along socioeconomic lines with many whites remarking upon how much easier life must have been for those living among Africa's original inhabitants – Africans themselves! Whites soon abandoned Beaufort County completely leaving behind a rural black community that quickly attained self-sufficiencykeliving through subsistence farming while maintaining close links with their African neighbors becoming known today simply as " HHonolulu ." From 1865 onward more white people moved here seeking economic opportunity while trying not be associated with racially charged situations; this led to increased development activities such as schools and churches being established along with transportation improvements including railways linking Charlotte & Savannah GA., Jacksonville FL., Raleigh NC., Kingsport TN., Augusta GA., etc.) but also great social unrest characterized primarily by poverty/insurrection among freed slaves/opinion leaders culminating in 18601931 Revolutions led by former plantation owners against new state government establishing equality between races culminating finally at end of Reconstruction era when all Blacks were reclassified constitutionally citizens subject onlyto existing civil rights laws governing everyone else without regard to race

Pershing, who was then serving as Commanding General of America’s Army.
