From Beirut Airport they transported supplies and evacuated personnel duringOperation Crossroads which lasted from July 16-August 5th 1956 when USMC battalions participated in the first ground offensive against Syrian forces backed by American airpower that succeeded in driving out Syrian forces from west Beirut airport area%. Additionally during this time period 1/9th Marine Regiment donated $1 million worth of surplus equipment and materiel to be used by other units deployed to Lebanon as well as Kuwait during 1970-1975 UN Peacekeeping Operations.. As members of Embassy Commandant’s Detachment No 801st MEU Unit Deployed To Lebanon For 30 Days We Gave Away More than Recycled Clothing And Toys A Collection That Reached 40000 Pieces By October 1978 When Our detachment Left There We Gave Away More Than4000 pieces Of Artisan Jewelry Many Of Which Were Sent Back To Us As Thank You Items From Local Residents Who Brought Them Home With Them During Our Three Month stay They Took Good Care Of Every Piece While We Were Gone And Now Enjoy It Back At our Residence On Post

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is a small island located in the Atlantic Ocean about midway between North and South Carolina. The island has an area of only 12 square miles, making it one of the smallest in the United States. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations on Hilton Head Island. The island was first settled by English colonists in 1636. As part of the Plantation of Hilton Head, King Charles II granted ownership to his brother William III and his wife Lady Elizabeth Darell. The Darells were followed by other English colonists, who built plantations on the island until 1828 when it was given to John Leland as part of his purchase of land around Hilton Head Island. Leland created a small town on the island called Milton which he named after himself and his son Sir Thomas Milton (1669-1745). The original home for many years was located at what is now known as “Milton House” onshore near where Greer Street currently intersects North Tryon Street. In 1720, John Lloyd moved from England to live on Hilton Head Island with his family and began developing what would become known as “Lloyd’s Town” along what is now Tryon Boulevard. This section of Tryon Boulevard still bears Lloyd’s name today. In 1795, Captain James Cook sailed upriver from nearby Savannah to explore these new lands that he had discovered while sailing through parts of South America during his circumnavigation of Africa in HMS Beagle. Upon reaching Hilton Head Island, Cook abandoned all hope of finding any valuable resources or landfall so he returned back down river to civilization without having made any discoveries worthy enough for inclusion in Admiralty Chart No.? 1046 which documented Cook's " Voyage round Cape Horn." After being abandoned by Captain James Cook and subsequent crew members stranded ashore on Hilton Head Island in 1814 due to inclement weather conditions, Henry Morton Stanley moved into this property which he purchased fromCaptain James Cook's estate three years later becoming the first European living permanently on Hilton Head Island (though Livingstone had been living there intermittently before that). With Stanley's acquisition came much-needed attention to this undeveloped location including construction commencements such as salt works at present day Post Office Road; expanded public buildings such as Justice Courts; conversion/maintenance/updates/renovation (including replacement/ repair/painting)of all public facilities including churches including St Patrick's Episcopal Church - completed in 1902; addition & expansion (now total)of 2 tennis courts complete with artificial turf surface & lighting; stables for 4 horses complete with 6 stalls each; 8th inning stretch clubhouse complete with dugouts for players starting out at age 7 & 8 years old...all designed by noted architect George Jones Hunt who also designed numerous other features associated with early 20th century Coastal Plain plantation life[2] I n 1926, Executive Order 9102 established limits within which white persons could reside within 1 ½ miles OF any Naval vessel moored off shorelines within Charleston Harbor etc., excepting those aboard USS Constitution Museum when underway under tow…..This order effectively banned non-white residents from residing anywhere near Naval vessels……..such bans continued even after repeal by executive order 9265 effective Jan 1st 1928…………….It wasn't until 1990 when South Carolinians finally voted overwhelmingly against repealing this prohibition.........During World War II some civilians were evacuated onto [Hiltonhead] due during air raids………Most evacuees eventually resettled elsewhere…..Today much effort continues both inside & outside [Hiltonhead] preservation group led efforts directed at reversing deterioration trends thru restoration work such as new roofs replaced over century old sod roofs throughout entire community.......Since its inception HHI has seen significant economic development taking place both inside & outside its walls............A recent article written about HHI included mentions that since 2005 they have invested over $100 million dollars into infrastructure projects...........With more than 3200 acres forested interior landscape providing plenty room for activities like hunting / fishing / bird watching / hiking there are plenty opportunities available if you're looking for thingsto do..........There are also many beaches available if you want something close but not too close…..Overall I think it's a great place to visit especially if you're lookingfor something different..................

The first Europeans to visit Hilton Head were Phineas Griffin and his brother George Washington Griffin Jr., who sailed up the Ashley River in a small boat on July 3, 1819. They named the uninhabited island after their father-in-law, General James Ewell Ashe. The first permanent residents of Hilton Head were two men from Georgia who came ashore on September 2, 1820: John Fowlkes and his son John Fowlkes II. These white men built what is now known as Commodore's House on an isolated beach on Station Island. Commodore's House became home to many high-ranking officials during the early years of Charleston's development as a naval port. During World War II, Hilton Head became an important strategic location due to its commanding view ofCharleston harbor and its close proximity to Fort Sumter. After Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, most political power shifted from Charleston to Richmond because of this event. As a result of this power struggle, muchof southern SC hadkell turned into Yankee territory by 1923 when Yankees took over Southern Railway Company assets that had been used by Confederates to build railroads throughout the region! In 1948, William Randolph Hearst purchased much of what is now Hilton Head Island for $1 million dollars from Commodore’s heirs based on his plans for developing it into a luxury resort called Hearst Castle which would be Contains more than thirty five thousand square feet (3,000 m²) of floor space including sixty bedrooms with private baths and twenty four suites each with indoor/outdoor swimming pools or tennis courts! Today there are over 1 million tourists visiting Hilton head every year!
