Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is a small, uninhabited island in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of the main islands of Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The island was first inhabited by Native Americans and later became part of the British Colony of Charleston. In 1838, the British government surrendered control of Charleston to US forces during the American Revolution, and Hilton Head became part of the newly formed United States. The island has been a law enforcement center and tourist destination since its establishment. After Hurricane Hugo made landfall onshore on September 26, 1992, local officials ordered all residents to evacuate before any damage could be done to their homes or property. As a result, most of the population remained on-island until after Hugo had passed away. The first recorded sighting of Hilton Head Island was by Portuguese sailors in 1534 when they charted it as "Islanda de Hernando". In 1664 Englishmen discovered it while sailing from England to North America and named it "Hilton Head", after General Sir John Hector Hammond (1624-1698), who fought for England in King James II's army during the English Civil War. The name stuck and was used for both mainland South Carolina and Hilton Head Island until 1838 when Charleston took over naming rights for both islands jointly with neighbouring Union County *. The original land grant that allowed development on Hilton Head Island was issued by Governor Thomas Gorgas in 1775.* By 1833 only some scattered coconut trees were left standing on what is now known as Main Street*; however*, due to lack of resources *and*) concessionaires began building cotton plantations starting in earnest around 1830*. Between 1840 and 1860 there were more than 60 slaves working plantation fields on Hilton Head Island†(*). After free negroes were brought over from Africa beginning in 1861*, slaveowners decided to sell off their slaves rather than keep them underpaid*(‡). From 1865 through 1971 there were total white population totals numbering only 7 people†(*). Slavery ended officially in South Carolina following passage at statehood of The 13th Amendment which abolished slavery within states †(*). However*, many freedmen continued to work throughout Reconstruction**(***) until abolition finally came about through legislation sponsored by Congressman Daniel Webster in 1870*. During World War II almost 2,000 men from Southern California served aboard submarines USS Sharky (SS-405) *and* USS Tigerfish (SS-413) stationed at an air base near Palmetto Bay on Hilton Head Island‡(*). A detachment also served aboard USS Vizcaya (*)(#)). Eighty percent or more of all enlisted personnel engaged with submarines serving out near Palmetto Bay came from California‡(*). Most submariners wore blue uniforms but one group saw service wearing Army fatigues‡(*)(#)). While not every submarine operated at Palmetto Bay (*), submariners who did often spent time ashore operational areas such as Mission Beach where they participated primarily in anti-submarine warfare patrols #(#)). Some Californians even gained experience as shore bombardiers firing live rounds into enemy submarines from high altitudes #(#))! Particularly notable during World War II was Operation Neptune's Spear which successfully destroyed two German U-boats off Cape Hatteras“†(*)? Fifty nine Southern California sailors died heroically while conducting this operation – including 6 membersofthe Coast Guard? This event is considered one step towards ending World War II hostilities between America & Nazi Germany.? For his services rendered Herbert Hoover bestowed upon him posthumously an award called “The Navy Cross? This distinction honored him because he had advanced knowledge about underwater torpedoes which would have stopped most attacks had they been operating against our fleet.?
