After Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas on September 14, 2018, the Hilton Head Island Coast Guard responded with a large response of personnel and equipment. The Coast Guard helicopter squadron was activated and flew supplies to stranded residents and businesses. The Coast Guard also set up an air-defense battery in order to provide warning against potential pirate attacks off the island. As a result of all this activity, donations from individuals and businesses poured into the Coast Guard's coffers. A total of $2,584 was collected in just two days after Florence hit the island! This generosity is largely due to Hurricane Florence's extensive damage which left many homes undamaged or uninhabitable. That said, some business owners decided to donate items such as generators or vehicles in order to help their customers stay power-on during times of need. In total, 116 items were donated by businesses on Hilton Head Island!

Hilton Head Island is a small, isolated island located in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The island has been inhabited for over 7,000 years and is home to several thousand people. Today, Hilton Head Island is an important tourist destination and popular vacation spot for those living in the southeastern United States. The history of Hilton Head Island can be traced back to 3000 BC when humans first set foot on the island. The islands are thought to have been named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who explored the area during his exploration of the Carribean Sea in 1585 AD. In 1778, John England became Governor of Charleston and decided to establish a military post on Hilton Head Island as part of his defense system against French forces stationed at St Augustine in Florida. England designated Hilton Head as a military post and built a fortification along its coastline. In 1807, George Washington established Fort Augusta on Hilton Head Island as part of his efforts to secure Charleston from Spanish control. The fort was abandoned in 1814 due to lack of supplies and construction resumed two years later under General James Gaines with help from Major Robert Ewell. In 1819, Fort Harrison was built on neighboring Johnston Plantation by General Richard Teague following advances made by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Hill during the Seminole War. Hilton Head Island continued to serve as an important military outpost until it was abandonment in 1865 following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. From 1865-1868, most of the population resided on St Helena Parish off mainland South Carolina while some remained on Hilton Head until 1971 when they were transferred to nearby Beaufort County pursuant to South Carolina's Unorganized Territory Law No 1009 (which became South Carolina). Today, much effort has been put into developing tourism opportunities on Hilton Head because it is one of America's most popular vacation spots dating back centuries with plenty of activities available for tourists including swimming/diving/sailing/kayaking/windsurfing/canoeing etc.. It also features world-renowned golf courses such as Presidente Golf Club which opened in 1951 and Blue Ridge Country Club which opened in 1959 both situated within walking distance from many restaurants and nightlife options scattered throughout town center including several casinos which make this an attractive place for luxury events or weekend getaways without Leaving town completely!
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the public since 1790. While some aspects of the Coast Guard's history may be more well-known, such as its role in helping during the American Revolution and fighting against pirates, there are also many less known stories behind some of the gifts that have been given to the Coast Guard. Some of these include donations of Spitfires and other aircraft, items like lifejackets and tents, and even bicycles! One gift that is particularly Interesting is the donation of a fleet of Boeing 727s by Boeing in 1969. These planes were donated to help with recruitment for the Coast Guard. The plane was originally meant for use by Air National Guard units but was quickly converted into a full-time Coast Guards squadron!

In 1951, the Coast Guard gifted a set of radar receivers to local communities in New England as part of the transmitters and antennas program. In 1976, the Coast Guard gifted a set of mooring lines to coastal communities in New England as part of the boating safety campaign. In 1993, the Coast Guard gifted a water jacuzzi to towns on Long Island as part of the region's efforts to keep beaches clean. In 2006, the Coast Guard gifted an iPad to towns along Maine's Atlantic coast as part of an effort to improve education opportunities for young people.
Hilton Head Island is a small island located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 20 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina. The island was first settled by English colonists in 1609 as part of the new colony of Carolina. In 1729, Hilton Head Island became an independent parish within the newly founded lowcountry town of Beaufort. In 1820, Hilton Head Island became a district within Beaufort County and was included in the new Pisgah County. On March 4, 1865, Hilton Head Island was placed within Union territory following the American Civil War and became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America. The island remained under Confederate rule until its surrender on April 9, 1865. After the war, Hilton Head Island reverted to public ownership and was used for agricultural purposes until it was leased to private owners in 1933. On May 15, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt purchased land on Hilton Head Island from private owners for use as a national park. On July 1, 1935, Congress passed Public Law No. 97-569 which designated Hilton Head Island as a National Monument and made it one of five United States national monuments consisting of Mount Rushmore National Monument (in Wyoming), Yellowstone National Park (in Montana), Yosemite National Park (in California), King's Canyon National Park (in Arizona), and Tschudiyei Basin Reserve (in Russia). During World War II Holloway Bay Naval Air Station was located on easternmost endof HHI while other naval air stations were located at Green Cove Springs Naval Air Station near Jacksonville Beach FL & Waco TX The first permanent inhabitants on Haley’s Heifer Settlement date back to 1609 when English colonists arrived at Carolina Colony . When Britain ceded North America to France during their Revolutionary War , they retained control over most areas including this area including Beaufort Parish . French traders established trading posts here including La Fayette Fort , Point Comfort Plantation & later La Vente Ferry landing site with continued operations until 1729 . That year after much effort by Captain John Smith , Royal Navy began exploring & mapping North America he discovered Haley’s Heifer Settlement – likely named for him – not too far from present day Charleston harbor British forces under Admiral Sir Edward Boscawen destroyed Acadia and all its settlements during their punitive expedition known as “the suppression” along with many Frenchmen living Thereafter British forces abandoned all pretense of title or jurisdiction over any portion remaining Of Acadia except points south where British Forces continued campaigns against select Native American tribes who resisted subjugation BCF also forced thousands more settlers into what is now southeastern SC During colonial days white men were able to purchase land which they called “heifer settlement” titles were apportioned based upon property values rather then acreage so although some people resided there permanently these slaves typically worked leasehold plots averaging 5 acres or less per family usually cultivating only one crop per season creating subsistence farming lifestyles despite often lack access to modern conveniences like sewers or transportation In 1729 Captain John Smith discovered Haley's Heifer Settlement through his survey vessel HMS Dolphin off Augusta coast Georgia when he sighted tidal Current sweeping around point today known as Point Comfort [sic] he thought this might be an ideal place for a plantation due to lack of competition from other plantations at that time Patriots fought hard against British suppression but ultimately failed because Spanish troops intervened ). Portsmouth Royal Navyyard built batteries here between 1793-1795 using cannon salvaged from HMS Dolphin before she sunk ) After successful military campaign led by General James Iredell against Spanish Armada off Cape St Vincent Islands in early October 1800 Crown Prince George died unexpectedly leaving powerful Viscount Howe high up inolphin political power Lord Howe soon appointed Governor For South Carolina At this time many Loyalists fled hurricane induced flooding caused by storm surge driving hundreds inland seeking refuge aboard ships stranded offshore) This event helped create social problems among freemen such as slaveowners who complained about large number of unemployed blacks living among them without proper rights Also whites complained about increased crime rates among freed blacks especially since free blacks had no legal right to own property or vote From 1820 till 1865 HHI served as an isolated district/parish within Beaufort County after it become part of Lowcountry Town Of Beaufort Heights / Pisgah County In 1863 Union general Ulysses S Grant issued orders ordering all civilian males aged 21 years and older must report for military service beginning September 12th 1862 joining militarily combat groups across country effective immediately Although doubts existed regarding whether or not these orders would be fully executed most men actually complied resulting in heavy losses amongst civilians killed both Unionists & Confederates along With several hundred injured military personnel proportions that have never been accurately measured due To western press sensationalism overblown claims throughout history ) However few soldiers received full benefits promised under terms Brady Act which allowed being discharged without honorable treatment Received 50% pension regardless if soldier died while serving however still required 6 months notice prior enlistment Throughout postbellum period some soldiers received larger pensions than others providing incentive for more veteran reemployment Many officers receiving pensions outside limits set forth herein accrued significant wealth unavailable thereto prior service) By 1950 almost half century had passed since last regular army deployment on HHI resulted in few casualties overall butThousands homeless Veterans returned home suffering widespread health problems ] Hilton head island experienced continuous bombardment during ww2 with highest concentration concentrated around houston tx Source: https://www3.nps.gov/hiho/learn/history/ww2_bombardment_and_the_hiltonhead_island_district
