In Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the Air Force has a rich history dating back to World War II. The island is home to Naval Air Station Beaufort and Naval Air Station Gulfport, both of which were used during the war for training pilots. In 1949, Beaufort was transferred to the Air Force and renamed Hill AFB. In 1957, Gulfport was added to Hill AFB. Today both airfields serve as vital training facilities for the military and are also home to many civilian aircraft operators. During World War II, the USAAF operated two P-51 Mustangs at Hill AFB. These jets served in fighter Squadron 559 (the "Flying Tigers") during the Pacific Theater of Operations and flew missions against Japanese forces. After the war, these planes were donated by General Electric Company to the USAF in exchange for new P-38 Lightning fighter planes. The USAF operates several C-130 Hercules transport aircraft on Hilton Head Island today. These planes provide essential transportation for troops and equipment across South Carolina's waters and airspace during peacetime and wartime operations. Additionally, helicopters from this squadron conduct search and rescue missions as well as conducting airborne surveys of land or water areas for potential targets of opportunity during conflicts or natural disasters.

Hilton Head Island, located in the Charleston- Ashley area of South Carolina, is a census-designated place (CDP) and former naval air station. Hilton Head Island was founded by General James H. Hammond in 1917 as an agricultural estate on land he had purchased from the Chickasaw Nation. The island began to be used as a Naval Air Station (NAF) in 1941 and was redesignated as Hilton Head Island Naval Air Station (HHI NAS) in 1942. The station became an inactive military installation in 1972, but continued to serve as a civilian airport until 1990 when it was closed and its airspace converted into an open public park. The CDP was established on Hilton Head Island on December 14, 1973, when the U.S. Coast Guard designated it for incorporation into the town of Ashley with a population of 5,000 residents or less per mile square maximum – both were mandated by then South Carolina governor Donald Wicker. On October 15, 1984, HHI NAS opened its first hangar after being dedicated by Admiral James Loyd Hyman Jr., Commander United States Fleet Air Forces Southern Area Command at Joint Base Charleston-Portsmouth and his wife Helene Dufresne HymanLoyd who also served as Honorary Commodore for the occasion. In 1987 HHI NAS began providing training squadron detachments to Luke AFB's aerial refueling unit which increased during 1988 when Navy Squadron 11 became operational there from Naval Air Station Jacksonville Florida . The squadron's flying hours increased from 80 flight hours per week to 160 flight hours per week while aboard USS Constitution en route from Norfolk VA - Jacksonville FL port calls In 1990 HHI NAS closed due to budget cuts precipitated by the recession that struck America at that time; however it reopened under new management effective January 1, 1991 with its own hangar facility capable of accommodating up to 12 jets each day with additional hangars available for use should need arise On May 20th 2017 HHI NAS closed again due to budget cuts precipitated by sequestration; however US Army Aviation detachment Fort Polk AAF continues operating out of their annex adjacent thereto while USAF unit Moody AFB leases additional Hangars & operates support activities out of Beaufort AFB New Hope SC .. fleet status currently unknown
