Hanahan is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Hanahan is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg metropolitan area. The original site of Hanahan was on the banks of the Savannah River. A sawmill and grist mill were built there in 1824 by Caleb Hahn and his brother Jacob Hahn. In 1827, Elijah Carney purchased land east of Hanahan from John S eckel for $1,000. He built a large brick house on this tract that still stands today. In 1829, Phebe Stephenson bought property west of Hanahan from Elijah Carney for $2,500. She built a large frame home that still stands today. Phebe Stephenson was also one of the first women to own land in Spartanburg County when she purchased property west ofHanahan from Elijah Carney for $2,500 in 1829. In 1830, Augustus Coleman moved to Hanahan from Edgefield and started a blacksmith shop which still stands today. In 1840, Johnathan Powell bought land east of Hanahan from Phebe Stephenson for $3,000. He started a white cotton gin which still stands today and is used as an agricultural museum today. In 1850-1851 Jnoah Cramer made improvements to his farmstead known as "Cramer's Hill." This farmstead has been preserved as part of the historic district called "Cramer's Hill." In 1861-1862 James Holland married Mary Jane Fenton and moved toHanahan with her; they raised two children there before moving back to Edgefield later that year . They continued to live inHanahan until their death in 1917 . They are buried at Greenville Cemetery . From 1865-1868+ Reverend GORDON MILTON lived with his wife Miss ELIZA ELLISON (Died Jan 9th 1870) on their plantation near present day Columbia , SC during said years while ministered here within our Methodist Episcopal Church next door viz: Mr Miltons Chapel where services were held daily & evening Sabbathdays

Hanahan was founded by the Hanahans in 1802. The family name came from the town of Hanahan, in Germany. The first settler, John Hanahan, arrived in 1786 and built a cabin on the present site of the town. In 1802, his son-in-law, David Cobb, moved to Hanahan and began to farm. He also became a Justice of the Peace. In 1825, John Hanahan's grandson, Amos (Amos) Hanahan, married Mary Aiken and started a family that would live here until 1966. The village had a population of about 100 people when it was platted in 1825. By 1860, it had increased to 300 people and by 1870 it had reached its current size of about 1,500 people. The Village Development Plan forHanahan dated back to 1830 which proposed that two churches be built within 10 miles of each other with an adjacent schoolhouse as well as other public buildings including warehouse and taverns. These plans were never executed due to financial constraints but they have been preserved as historical artifacts at the village museum since their creation. In 1886, four brothers - James Fenton (1836-1912), George Fenton (1838-1920), Ambrose Fenton (1841-1921) and Arthur Hinton (1845-1927) - founded what is today known as Piggott’s General Store in centralHanahan Village which served as a meeting place for farmers who bought goods from local merchants such as Piggott & Co., Jno Wiggin & Sons etc.. This store lasted until 1913 when it was replaced by C&D Grocery Store which still stands today across from the post office next door. A fire destroyed most ofthe original buildings in 1907 but some remain including: Old Post Office – original structure remains; Methodist Episcopal Church – rebuilt after 1907 fire; School House – originally constructed in 1830; clubhouse – first erected circa 1889; grain silo – first erected circa 1912; swimming pool – constructedcirca 1945
Hanahan was founded in 1786 by Hugh Hanahan and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the Battle of Bunker Hill which took place on April 26, 1775. The town developed as a hub for slave trade and farming. In 1811, the town became part of Spartanburg County. In 1864, the county was divided into two parts, and Hanahan became part of Spartanburg County proper.
