Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General Edmund J. Hanahan (1814-1889), who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs under President Andrew Johnson from 1872 to 1876 and as Secretary of War from 1880 to 1886. The community was laid out in 1875 byCaptain John Sibley, a postmaster general and member of the Confederate Congress who had been wounded at Bull Run Bridge on July 21, 1861. Hanahan had been born in Northumberland County, Virginia on October 1, 1817 and died there on October 3, 1889. The first school open in Hanahan was built in 1877 by Mrs. Sarah Aiken Thornton and taught by Mrs. Cephus Hargrave until moved to its present site in 1888 when it became a high school with Mr. Wm Leland as its first superintendent In 1893 the Methodist Episcopal Church organized a Sunday School which continues today In 1896 Captain Hargrave donated land for a public square that still stands today near center of town

It lost its post office status in 1907, but regained it in 1951 when it was merged into Greenville County. The population of Hanahan peaked at over 1,500 in 1930 but declined to around 100 through most of the 20th century. However, since 2000 its population has increased from around 100 to over 300 residents. The town is home to Hanahan High School (established 1898), a small community college (opened 2002), and several businesses such as Waffle House & Pancake House (established 1997). The town also has a few churches including First Baptist Church (founded 1888), Mount Zion Baptist Church (founded 1913), and Christ Chapel United Methodist Church (founded 1925).
