Hanahan is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hanahan post office opened on July 10, 1881, and was discontinued on September 25, 1984. The first settler in Hanahan was John A. Hanahan Jr., who arrived there in 1876 from Bedminster Township, New Jersey. He became a surveyor and real estate developer in the area and built many homes and businesses around the town center including the now defunct "Bishop's Estate" hotel which he operated for more than 50 years until his death in 1977. John A.Hanahan's son John P. Hanahan also became an interested landowner around here; he subdivided much of what is now known as eastern Spartanburg County into Lots 15 through 20 (now sections 23-29) of . Hanahan is a town in and the county seat of Hanahan County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,459 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Captain John Hanahan in 1811 on land purchased from Lord Winder's plantation in what is now Spartanburg County. He named it for his father, James Hanahan, who had come to America as a refugee from Plantation House near Dublin, Ireland in 1784. The first stores and post office were built in the town by Mr. John Bigham and Mr. James Tilton in 1814. A school was established on February 10, 1830 by Rev Drs Benjamin Fenton and David Waddell; it continued until 1865 when it became known as Union Academy; it reopened as Hogan School in 1978. The first store called "The General Store" opened on November 3rd, 1814 located at corner of Court Street and High Street (now Main Street). In 1824 Captain John Hanahan united with other citizens of Spartanburg County to establish the local militia company which he commanded until his death on October 30th of that year at age 75 years old while serving with Company C stationed at Columbia Ferry Landing on Lake Nechachey about 15 miles due east of Spartanburg Captain John's brother Archibald also served with this unit during that time Captain John's widow Elizabeth married Rev Dr David Waddell also from Scotland their son Daniel Waddell became a Congregational minister in Charleston Reverend Daniel Waddell moved to Aberdeen Virginia after Samuel Henson died leaving an estate there which Daniel divided among himself three parts going to each one of his children but none received any share because Reverend Daniel Waddell predeceased Samuel Henson . After Reverend Daniel Waddell died young without sons or daughters some rumors circulated that he may have been poisoned like his father so these rumors continue today .
