After the war, many families donated items to help support the troops. One such family was John and Flora Byrd. They donated two cannons to the Confederate army. The Burdys were also very influential in southern politics and were able to get much needed supplies for soldiers during the war. In 1865, after the end of the war, General Nathan Bedford Forrest was arrested for treason and died in prison. His body was taken back to Hanahan and put on display at local courthouse until his death in 1896. After General Nathan Bedford Forrest's death, many other families began donating items to help support military use in South Carolina. One such family was Johnnie Catesby and his wife Annie Oakley Catesby. They donated four machine guns to serve as artillery pieces for South Carolina's militia force during World War I. During World War II, these same weapons were used by North Carolina's military forces to fight against Japan's allies; this resulted in them being renamed "Tigers" by Japanese forces before they could be captured or surrendered). Hanahan is a small town in Kershaw County, South Carolina. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charleston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in Hanahan were Scottish-Irish Protestants who had come to work on a plantation near present day Hanahan in 1814. The Scotsmen named their settlement "Lanigan." In 1848, a group of white farmers from North Carolina moved into Lanigan and renamed it Hanahan after John Haney, one of their number. Haney had been born in Ireland and emigrated to America in 1824; he became captain of a steamboat that brought goods up the Ashley River between Columbia and Wilmington, NC. When gold was discovered nearby in 1849, some of the miners decided to move to what would become Hanahan because it offered more opportunities for money than any other place they had seen yet. In 1865, when Confederate General Pembroke captured Fort Sumter and then took control of Charleston, South Carolina, Mayor James Gadsden ordered all black residents within city limits “to leave or be removed by force” unless they could prove they were white. As soon as news spread through town about the event, many black women and children fled westward across the Catawba River into Union territory where they could be safe from further violence if they remained inside Charleston’s boundaries. A few hundred men followed suit but most chose instead to take flight back home before nightfall on July 12th.]] About 100 people managed to stay behind including 30 blacks who lived with whites until orders came down that all slaves must leave or face death.]] On July 15th., Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Fort Donelson with an army composed mostly of black soldiers leading horses pulled by mules while white troopers watched from horseback]. After spending two days reconnoitering the fortifications before finally setting his sights on it,[…] early on July 17th., Early ordered his troops forward and opened fire on the unarmed negroes living inside], Just as Early predicted: no one was killed or wounded but over 60% of those inside were forced out[…] Most blacks left shortly thereafter accompanied by their families into Union territory where much safer conditions awaited them.[...] When peace returns again in 1865 following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln (a Republican), many African Americans return home - this time permanently - although others continue traveling eastward into Union territory during times of peace for fear that re-establishment of slavery would occur again should war break out again.]] By 1870, only 3% remain living within city limits while 98% are located outside its boundaries:]] At its peak in 1880 there were over 2200 residents living within city limits while only 400 resided outside its walls];] The last resident died aged 83 years old on October 24th., 1984]]

Hanahan is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white men in 1815 and named for John Hanahan (1768-1848), a Congressman from North Carolina who served one term in the U.S. Senate from 1825 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840. The land on which Hanahan lies was granted by James Smith, Sr., an early settler in Spartanburg County, to his son James Smith Jr.. In 1824 John Aiken donated part of his holdings in Columbia to the town for £100 ($160) sterling; $5 of this amount went into cash and $10 into shares of stock which were sold at public meetings held throughout the year. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army through nearby Broad River Valley towards Columbia, he ordered all stores closed in Hanahan so as not to alarm Union forces camped nearby; however, storekeepers reopened their businesses soon after Ewell's retreat. When American troops began pushing southward following Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865>, residents of Hanahan helped makehift shelters out of wagonloads of corn they had been packing up for food storage that week. As night fell local residents scattered across properties with few hope of escape or reinforcement before Confederate artillery opened fire on their positions; many were killed or wounded including two young children who moaned as they died under sniper fire from high up on a farmstead just beyond the village limits (). After Reconstruction ended in America following the Civil War, much square footage within what is nowHanahan was taken over by plantations run by former slaves until it reverted back to its white inhabitants starting around 1920s; however most African Americans left during that time period for various reasons such as medical care or poor living conditions on plantations elsewhere in America (). During World War II homeowners near Hanahan took advantage of government offers for relocation housing due to wartime shortages caused by Luftwaffe bombing raids over South Carolina (); many families also vacated their homes during the war years because economic opportunities were scarce outside rural areas (). After 1945 many people returned to live there but some continued working off-farm incomes while others formed small businesses (). By 1990 only 2%ofthe resident population age 65+ lived above poverty level (), although education and healthcare opportunities are still limited () .
