In 1933, the town applied for liquor licenses but were refused because they were located in a "dry" county. In 1936, Hanahan became the first community in Spartanburg County to have its own electric utility. In 1941, during World War II, Hanahan helped provide food and fuel for troops stationed in nearby Camp Pickett. After the war ended, many of the original Welsh settlers returned to Hanahan and started new businesses including a grocery store and post office.
