Hanahan is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina located on the Atlantic Ocean about 25 miles south of Georgetown and 10 miles north of Charleston. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Hanahan is part of Greenville County. The town was founded by two brothers, Hiram and John Hanahan, in 1824. They named their settlement after James Peele, an Englishman who had settled in South Carolina in 1786 and built a plantation there. The Hanahans were later joined by other settlers and began to build homes around 1829-30. The first post office was established at Hanahan in 1830, but it only opened for business one day before being closed due to lack of mail service from Georgetown. In 1840, George Aiken purchased some land near present-day Hanahan from the Hannan brothers and started building what would become known as Aiken's Plantation on that property which became one of the largest plantations inSouth Carolina during that time period. The town experienced significant growth following its incorporation as a municipality in 1865; by 1870 it had a population of 2,500 residents and was home to three churches (one Congregational). Hanahan is a small town in southwestern South Carolina, located on the banks of the Ashley River. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. The town was founded by white settlers in 1853 as a result of Hanahan's location between two large saltpits on Ashley River. One saltpit remained operational until 1951, while the other was decommissioned and demolished in 1955. In 1902, local farmers organized a cooperative to raise produce for their own market. Through hard work and cooperation, these farmers became known as the "Hanahan pioneers." The Hanahan Pioneer Cemetery is located approximately one mile east of town near US 86/827. The cemetery contains interments dating back to 1853-1855 when the first settlers arrived in Hanahan. A second cemetery has been erected since 2004 adjacent to First Baptist Church which served as community center until its demolition in 2011 In 1875, an act was passed by the State of South Carolina providing for public education within each county except that of Charleston where only slaveholders were allowed free schooling. On July 1st, 1876 (“An Act to Prohibit Slavery within This State”), Hanahan school board voted unanimously to offer free instruction for colored children from 4 years old up through high school age beginning on October 1st following passage by state legislature allowing such measures pursuant to new state constitution due process clause provision authorizing black citizens “to enjoy all civil rights and privileges enjoyed by white citizens” notwithstanding color line segregation existing at that time within state government institutions including schools system therefore providing educational opportunities not available to slaves or any other race or color apart from whites only
