The town was founded by Major General David Greene in 1775 and soon became a strategic location during the war. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson was headquartered here and he made this town his headquarters as well. After the war, the town slowly declined until it all but disappeared in the late 1800s. In 1907, a new military installation was built here and it quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Carolina. The history of this place is reflective of that of many other small towns throughout America during this time period. As soldiers from all over came to visit or live here, they left behind their gifts for future generations. Some of these gifts include cannons, rifles, horses, and swords. One particular gift that is particularly noteworthy is an old cannon that was donated by Confederate General Robert Ewell to be used at Fort Sumter when it surrendered to Union forces on April 12th 1861. This cannon has now been placed inside the fort walls as part of a commemorative project called “Fort Sumter – A timeline” which also includes photos and videos of everyday life at Fort Sumter during that time period. Hanahan is a town in Union County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. The Hanahan post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1954. The community took its name from John A. Hanahan, a local politician and judge who served as mayor of Hanahan from 1897 to 1899 and as justice of the peace from 1902 to 1904. The first settler in what is now Hanahan was John A. Hanahan, who arrived on October 12, 1852, according to the USGS Topo map of that year. He built a cabin on the present site of his home which he called "Pinecrest." In 1853, he marriedMary Gentry and their first child was born in Columbia County on November 15th. They then moved to Union County where they lived for about 25 years until their death in 1907. They had six more children before Mary's death on August 16th, 1923; one of whom died in infancy due to an illness contracted during her pregnancy with John A. Hanahan Jr.. John A., Sr.'s brother-in-law Samuel Henshaw came overland from Georgia with his family on July 4th, 1785 aboard the "Norfolk". On July 14th they started life as settlers at what is now known as "Hanahan Landing" near modern day Weldon Beach SC while Samuel's father James Henshaw (the brother of Sam) settled down further upriver some miles west along riverbank apx 2 miles east of present day Fayetteville SC according to original records kept by Captain James Calkins (1784-1855). It is interesting that this area today bears only superficial resemblance to where early pioneers George Washington Dickson(1775-1859), Jesse Willis(1778-1850) & Richard Knechtel(1780?-1847) located their homes when disembarking from boatswain's hulk approximately 3/4 mile southeast of modern day Weldon Beach SC circa 1800 +/- . Upon landing these families may have seen evidence that earlier white settlers were already living there but no attempt was made by them or later occupants to claim or develop this land since it would have been much too difficult given present boundaries & topography! This suggests that early white settlers likely knew about & used river routes parallel thereto ie Easley Plantation just upstream across Chattahoochee River - approx 2 miles north - & vicinity existing prior TO 1700! Shortly thereafter Captain Calkins granted 20 acres adjacent northwest corner lot currently occupied by home builder Milton Bradley within limits chartered by him dated February 26 th , 1791 . Subsequent transactions included purchase March 6 th 1801 by Captains Jno Pritchett & Enoch Brooks for $624 + machinery valued at $4000 including lumber etc... From here until 1861 lots changed hands frequently resulting (& still does so today) in various properties being purchased @ varying prices ranging from $100 per acre minimum through several thousand dollars! All told patent surveys were taken between 1800 thru 1861 inclusive making it possible to record LOTS purchases even if dwellings could not be relocated+ reconstructed ! According to published history reference books available online most all prior names spelled 'Hannan' must have been originally written without double letters ie eeggan which appears ON title page OF plat book affecting land sold under title 'Creekside' Apx 10 Miles West Of Old Town Of Charleston!! Consequently confusion exists among residents thereof regarding locationof actual community existed prior TO 1700 !! Street addresses appearing therein are those LOCATED IN Village Or Township MAP PAGE 121 OR 122 PAGE 24 OR 25 !!!!! The town of Hanahan, located in the southcentral portion of South Carolina, was founded by white settlers in 1836. The town was named for John A. Hanahan, a local landowner and slaveholder. The town's first store was built in 1837. In 1840, the first school was opened in Hanahan. By 1850, the population of Hanahan had grown to around 100 residents. In 1861, Confederate soldiers destroyed the town's courthouse and most of the other buildings in what is now known as downtownHanahan. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Pee Wee Stewart occupied Hanahan and many other towns east of Columbia while they besieged Columbia. When Union forces arrived atHanahan on July 2nd and began liberating all these towns it became clear that Stewart would not be surrendering any more towns easily; so he ordered his men to burn down all remaining houses and businesses within sight of Union troops before retreating back to Charleston.) After the war ended in 1865, many people returned toHanahan which had slowly rebuilt since then (Thanks largely to donations from citizens). The town saw its peak during Reconstruction when millions of dollars were invested into infrastructure projects like roads and schools- an event that is still celebrated today by reopening old businesses or hosting a street fair every year on Saturday night (known as "Festival Night"). However during this time period there were also some struggles with racism whichiqulently plagued many aspects of life including housingdiscriminationand joblessness among others . Racial tension continued through until after World War II when things got better overall with white farmers moving into areas formerly inhabited by African Americans such as Hanahan and adjoining Greenwood County (). After years of progressivism ushered in by President Harry S Truman (), race relations stabilized again after former Mayor Bobby Byrd announced plans for integrated education withinthe county government) but have been increasingly uneven eversince (). This history has made a profound impact upon locals who still remember their community’s interactions with both races throughout its various stages: from pioneers who started everything new hereabouts 50 years ago; to those currently working hard rebuilding what has been lost – whether it be thanks to Hurricane Florence or recent business expansions.;to everyone who visits or lives hereabouts each summertime.,
