Hanahan is a community located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,854 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Aiken- Spartanburg metropolitan area, which has a total population of 937,877 according to the 2010 Census. Hanahan is situated on County Road A1, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Greenville and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Spartanburg. The town was founded by English colonists in 1811 as Hatboro on land donated by Major John Lennon Johnston. The town changed its name to Hanahan in 1824 after General James Easley Hanahan who led Confederate forces during the American Civil War and later served as Mayor of Greenville from 1865 to 1870. The first school was built in 1811 and classes began with six students in a small room on Main Street called "The Academy." In 1825, a second school building was erected on what is now Depot Square for 12 pupils under teacher Mrs. Gwynneth Hardwick Dickson who also taught girls until 1850 when she became Superintendent of Schools for Shelby County In 1830, two more schools were added: one for white children and one for black children; both were located on Second Street between Church and High Streets where they still are today In 1861, after the fall of South Carolina to Union troops under General Robert Ewell Jackson, Hatboro reverted back to its original name:Hanahan – derived from Hantonychus hatonis meaning "settled place" or "homestead". After Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War, most white southern whites returned home while many black Southerners remained living in poverty due largely to discriminatory Acts passed by Congress despite evidence that such measures would have no practical effect other than enriching those already well off while disadvantaging poorer blacks

Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Hanahan was named for General George Washington's brother-in-law Colonel Nicholas Hanahan. Hanahan was founded in 1820 by Major John Dixon and Captain Elijah Mills as a small station on the Catawba River. By 1830, it had grown to include a store, two churches, four schools and about fifty citizens. In 1836, the town incorporated and began to build a courthouse and other public buildings. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded South Carolina and captured Hanahan without battle. The Union forces under Abraham Lincoln tried to retake Hanahan but were unsuccessful; however, they burned all of the town's homes and stores in retaliation. The town recovered relatively quickly after that attack but lost its status as an important center when new facilities were built elsewhere in Spartanburg County. However, it retains its historical significance as one of southern Carolina's earliest settlements and as a place where many early pioneers learned English language skills before moving westward into what is now Oklahoma Territory or Texas during the 1800s
