Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Hanahan was made in 1824 by John Hanahan and his family as a result of land grants from the British government. The town was platted in 1828 and named for Caleb Hanahan, an early settler. A store and post office were founded here in 1830, but it failed to take off and was closed within a few years. A school and church were built here in 1836-37 by Methodist ministers Andrew Ballinger and James Cook under the direction of Bishop Robert Duncan Johnston. The townsite reverted to Indian ownership following the Treaty of Fort Pillow on November 17,1843. In 1865–66 Confederate General Pemberton burned most of the town while marching through it during his march across South Carolina to reinforcement for Operation Allianz which led to Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate forces at battles near Chattanooga

Hanahan is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 597 at the2010 census. Hanahan is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1853 by Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland and named for Captain John Hanahan of HMS "Duke" who had been killed during the American Revolution. The community's first school was built in 1855 and one of its first residents was Mrs. Catey Smith, who raised money to build a school for the town's children. In 1860, the first post office opened in Hanahan and it has remained active ever since. The local store also continues to provide essential services to the community today. Hanahan has experienced some significant events in its history including when Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived here with his army on April 12, 1865, and took up residence before later retreating back across the state line into Virginia; when United States Marine Corps Corporal James Ayer died while fighting alongside Marines ashore at Anacostia Bay on November 11, 1915; and when President Harry S Truman visited here on July 20, 1948. Today, Hanahan remains an important stop for travelers across Spartanburg County thanks to its close proximity to both Greenville metropolitan area as well as major shopping destinations such as Columbia (a few miles away) and Hilton Head Island (just east of town). Additionally, it is home to many local businesses including a bank (the First National Bank), several restaurants/cafes/bars/laundries etc., a post office (the Third Post Office), two churches (one Presbyterian and one Methodist), three schools (two elementary schools as well as a high school), two fire departments - one Volunteer Rescue Squad- type service which provides emergency medical aid during disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes - as well as numerous private homes used for various purposes such as farming or hosting conventions or meetings.
