Greer is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greer is well known for its annual Greer Pumpkin Festival, which began in 1868 and celebrates the culture and history of pumpkin eating. The town was founded by white settlers in 1827 as a trading post on the "Hillsborough River," about northwest of modern Greer. The name comes from English explorer John Gregg (1592–1666), who named it after his brother George Gregg (1490–1547). In 1830, settlers founded Fort Gregg on an arm of the Hiwassee River just east of present day Greer. A post office called Gregg was established in 1833 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1860, Confederate General Robert Ewell organized a brigade under General James Longstreet to march against Ulysses S. Grant's Union army at First Day's Battle of Gettysburg near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On July 1, 1861, while waiting for his brigade to join up with Longstreet's column near Harper's Ferry Junction northeast of Princeton Junction (), Ewell learned that Union forces had crossed the Potomac River into Virginia and were marching southeast towards him across Pickett’s Charge (). After learning that Longstreet would not be able to support him personally due to heavy casualties (), Ewell ordered his brigade back to camp and entered into battle without him., Greer then became one of several places along I-95 between Greensboro and Charleston where Confederate soldiers could encamp before leaving for their respective battlefields on July 3rd.–July 4th

Greer is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,638 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg metropolitan area. Greer was laid out by the subscription of white men in 1824 and named for General James Greer, an American Revolutionary War hero who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. The first land grant to Greer was dated December 17, 1828 from Sir Walter Raleigh to Wiley Wigglesworth. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Oconee River and its access to shipping lanes on both sides of the river. In 1834, General James Hogg donated one acre (0.40 km2) of his plantation called "Hog Island" east of Greer for a public schoolhouse and other purposes including a hospital and prison. In 1839, John Moultrie donated 4 acres (1 ha) northeast of Greer for military use as a fortification against Indians led by Chief Osceola during what is known as the Indian Removal Crisis. The fortifications were completed in 1840 and designated Fort Moultrie which served as Confederate headquarters in 1861-1865 during the Civil War; it also served as Union Headquarters from 1865 until 1865 when Confederate forces evacuated Charleston after their defeat at Appomattox Court House. In 1862-1863, local farmers began raising cotton in fields west of present day Greer along with small amount of rice production on Hog Island until this season's crop failed because of lack of water supplies due to geology changes along the Lower Oconee River system caused by large earthquakes that struck nearby Sullivan’s Creek region several years earlier Beginning early evening September 16 1886 when an 8 mile (12 km) long “ Consumption Crater” () filled with melted icecapped snow appeared on Topeka Hill about 12 miles southwest () northwest (), near present day Greenville), residents reported hearths burning all night long downhole accompanied by very loud music coming from within said craters... A well located 500 yards southeast () northeast (), near present day Greeley intersecting said creek approximately 1/4 mile below surface created an underground watercourse which begins immediately northward () after descendinggradient through 3 feet (.91 m) cave opening under Topeka Hill then continuing easterly direction passing beneath .75 acre (.23 ha) lot owned by Jno Acker regarding coal mine situated immediately northwest ()) between Topeka Hill & Hawkins Branch about 1/4 mile below surface
