The USS Greer was deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1990. The USS Greer served as the flagship for Commander, Task Force 38. It was decommissioned in 1998 and sold to a Greek shipping company. It arrived at Piraeus, Greece on October 15, 2002 and was towed to its new home port, Larissa, on November 3rd.
Greer is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greer was founded in 1837 by David Greer and others as a post office known as "Greenville." The present name of the town comes from General John C. Smith's observation that "Greer" meant "a place where rivers run quickly" in the Cherokee language. The first settler in Greer was David Greer who arrived on July 11, 1837. He named his farming community after General John C. Smith who had helped him purchase land from NativeAmerican Cherokees near what is now Greer. David and his family soon began to build homes and new churches in the small town which they called Grier Creek Township until they were able to incorporate as a village on November 1, 1838 under the name of Greenville according to an act passed by the state legislature on October 16th that year specifically for this purpose. On December 3rd, 1840, Greenville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,500 residents when it joined Spartanburg County with other counties within South Carolina due to its location along Interstate 95 just outside of Greenville proper limits making it easy for people to get around without having to leave their home county or city. One reason why GreER grew so rapidly during this time period was because there were few natural resources available in this area such as coal or oil but because these resources had been developed elsewhere people were willing to move here for these opportunities instead of waiting for them to become available again somewhere else in South Carolina like nearby Columbia or Charleston which both experienced rapid growth during this time period also thanks largely to railroads which brought goods and jobs directly into those areas rather than having them transported over long distances through landlocked states like North Carolina or Georgia where prices for goods increased prohibitively when shipped by boat or air whereas railroad transportation allowed those items (like coal) that could be transported much closerto consumers while still providing access to markets overseas so that prices remained reasonable even as production increased all throughout America including right here right inside our own state! In 1912 GreER became one of six towns located along I-95 between Columbia SC and Jacksonville FL annexed into Jacksonville FL becoming one big city! This change happened primarily because Jacksonville did not want any competition from Columbia SC when it came time for them all – especially since Jackson had been fastest growing city back then while ColumbiaSC slowly lost its steamware moving away from manufacturing towards services! In 1957 GreER once again changed hands becoming part of Spartanburg County when neighboring Laurens County decided not To annex into eitherJacksonville FL ORColumbia SC meaning each side kept their own government separate knowing full well how powerful & dominant each other would eventually become!
