The first coffee plantation in Greer was founded by Nicholas Roanoke in 1796. The company grew quickly and in 1831, they exported their first beans to Europe. By 1850, the Roanoke Coffee Company had a large plantation complex with over 200 acres of land. In 1861, the company merged with another South Carolina coffee business, the Wofford Coffee Company. The new company continued to grow rapidly and by 1882 it was operating an entire estate of over 400 acres. In 1886, the Roanoke Coffee Company became part of J.G. Bardin & Sons which would later become known as Peet's Coffee Corporation. After years of growth and expansion, Peet's Coffee Corporation acquired its own plantation complex in Greer in 1960 and began producing coffee there until 1985 when it closed down due to declining sales
Greer is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 3,827 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The town was platted in 1871 by General J.E.B. Stuart and named for his friend and mentor, Dr. Greer (1793-1875). The first white person to live in Greer was James Hargrave in 1874. Butterball Farms, a large butter factory located on the east side of town, was built by George Doolittle in 1924 and remains an important part of the community today. In 1945, Greer became home to one of America's first jet aircraft manufacturers when Grumman Aviation Corporation moved its operations from Jacksonville Beach, Florida to the townsite after buying land adjacent to then-demolished RAF Greenham Common airfield which had been used as a bombing range since World War II. The community experienced rapid growth during the late 20th century due to post-World War II boom times and1 subsequent expansion of nearby corporate businesses such as textile mills and restaurants that drove spurt population growth along with new housing developments on what had once been agricultural land now considered Forest Hills Golf Course and other various business parks across downtown Greer quickly becoming one of America’s most vibrant small towns despite daily struggles with funding shortages caused by double-digit joblessness rates throughout much of this period especially during economic recession years 2003–2007 when unemployment rates topped 10%. Today Greer continues its strong economy with continued investment by businesses including several major medical institutions including Baptist Health South Carolina University Hospital – their only hospital outside metropolitan Atlanta – primary healthcare providers Methodist Healthcare System - largest provider within two miles including dental care - over 180 smaller businesses totaling more than 2,000 employees directly or indirectly employing nearly 1/3rds of all active workforce providing essential services essential for quality life for almost everyone within easy reach while enjoying some quiet streetscape pleasures like being just south of beautiful Mount Pleasant National Park making it easy access also enjoyed good schools including Presbyterian School District No 1 (High School) which offers excellent college preparatory programs as well as world renowned Clemson University where many leading economists are educated which has led to numerous high level professional positions for many citizens over recent decades including current Mayor John Micklewhite who took office in January 2018 having served since November 2017 after serving as Deputy Mayor under then Mayor Tommy Battle

Greer is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Pickens County and the county's largest city. The town was founded in 1851 as a small posttown called Greer Station on the Eufaula River near modern-day Greenville. The first settler in Greer was John A. Brown who arrived in 1851. Greer Station served as a stop on the Eufaula Railroad until it was discontinued in 1854. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from Dalton to Pickens County after learning that Union forces were marching towards Greenville under General Ulysses S Grant. Brown had been with Ewell when he left Dalton and decided to stay behind to protect his home and herd his cattle on land that would soon become Greer. According to local lore, during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest recommended that Confederate general Robert Ewell move his army from Dalton topickenscounty because of its strategic location between Charleston and Savannah down river: "There ain't no place like pickens county for setting up camp." When General Robert Ewell did not agree with this recommendation he retreated back into Georgia but later withdrew all his forces east of the Mississippi River without encountering any Union forces. In 1865, Greer became part of newly created Pickens County after its territory was taken from Johnston County by Abraham Lincoln following the Battle of Appomattox Court House (April 12-13, 1865). The original plat for Greer station included property now located within Greenville limits; however most likely duelling over boundary lines which continued until about 1870 drifted much of this area northward into Greenville so that by 1880 there were only scattered farms and woods remaining around Greer Station lot".
