Greer is a small town located in the State of South Carolina. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. Greer is part of Greenville County and is within the Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Greer was organized in 1822 when the area around present day Greer was purchased from the Cherokee Nation by Colonel James Johnston and his wife, Mary Johnston. The Johnston family resided in what is now downtown Greer for many years before moving to their current home on Main Street in 1852. One of the first businesses established in Greer was a store operated by John Harris, which closed its doors in 1865 after only three months operation. The first post office opened on July 1, 1867, and was called "Johnston." In 1907, a millinery shop was built on Old Mill Road and continued to operate until it burned down in 1913. It should be noted that this millinery shop never produced any fabric products; it served as an impromptu store for local residents until 1957 when it finally closed its doors permanently due to lack of business support. A second millinery shop opened on May 12, 1916 under the name "Baxter's." It continued to operate until 1938 when it also burned down; however, this fire did not cause any permanent damage to the village since all of Baxter's inventory had already been destroyed prior to that date. In 1951, main street acquired its present-day alignment with two east-west streets running parallel to each other just north of where Depot Square currently stands; this addition helped create more open space within Greer Village limits while still accommodating some commercial activity needed for everyday life such as shopping malls nearby like US Highway 17 and Interstate 85 (I-85 Spur).
