The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Greer, SC in 1947. The gift was the F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft. The aircraft flew for the first time on December 5th, 1947 and participated in Operation Crossroads which was a test of the new jet fighter. The Aircraft were used by the 1st Fighter Wing at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio. In 1994, Air Force One transport plane was dedicated at Wright Patterson AFB in honor of General Curtis LeMay who served as Commander USAF during World War II and also founded the USAF.

Greer is a small town in South Carolina. It is located on the larger Ashley River, approximately 25 miles southwest of Charleston. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Greer has a history that dates back to 1822 when it was founded as an agricultural community by Anna Maria Greer and her husband John Hammond. The Hammonds were responsible for developing much of what is now Greer, including their home farm and outbuildings which still stand today. Anna Maria's granddaughter, Mrs. James Goode (1912-2002), became the first African American to serve as Mayor of Greer in 1969 and she remains its longest serving mayor to this day. In 1924, AnnaMaria's grandson George Hammond donated land for the creation of the Academy of Fine Arts which currently houses many local art galleries including The Creole Gallery & Cultural Center and The Griffin Museum of Art

In 1970, Greer merged with neighboring Greenwood to form what is now known as Southern Africa Inc., one of the largest black businesses in America. Despite this success, much of Greer's history remains largely unknown to most people outside of its small African American population. This lack of knowledge may be due to several factors such as historical neglect or reluctance by local officials to discuss greER history publicly because it might damage their political careers or relationships with white supremacists who control much of south carolina's government infrastructure. However, there are some efforts underway to rectify this situation; for example, a recent documentary about greER history entitled "The Unseen History" was shot in order to raise awareness about these issues and provide more accurate information about greER history within local communities.
