To learn more about the history of tactical coffee in Greenwood, we need to go back some time. In 1868, a group of men from Greenville set out on a journey to find new sources for coffee beans. They found an old plantation that had been abandoned and decided to start their own farm there. This was the first time that coffee farming was done in South Carolina. The Roemer farm grew quickly and soon became one of the biggest around. It was during this time that people started using different methods to roast their beans: French press, percolator, or hand-roasted. Greenwood was founded in 1819 by James Fenton and Edward Greenwood as a town on the Catawba River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1834 it became a village. In 1836, Greenwood became an incorporated city. It experienced significant growth during the American Civil War, with Battle of Greenville taking place there on April 12, 1861. Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army defeated Union forces at that battle, resulting in the death of over 1,500 soldiers in the engagement. After the war ended, Greenwood experienced rapid growth as a center for trade and commerce. In 1865, it became the capital of South Carolina when Charleston was moved to that state from Savannah. The city saw another period of growth during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; it became one of the most important industrial centers in South Carolina and attained great wealth from its businesses.Throughout this time various political movements emerged which had an impact on Greenwood; among these were the Ku Klux Klan (1868), Black Panthers (1968-1972), and gay rights movement (1978). The city's population reached its peak in 1984 with over 50,000 residents living within its boundaries; however, recent decreases have occurred due to gentrification and suburbanization around Greater Greenville.Today Greenwood is home to a small number of low-income residents as well as students attending local universities–all while remaining vibrant economically speaking
Greenwood, South Carolina is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is home to the Greenwood Academy and GreenWood Park. The city of Greenwood is also home to the Greenville Armoury and various manufacturing businesses.
The first settlement in what would become Greenwood was made by native Americans in 1795. The town was named after General James Aiken, who led an expedition against the Cherokee people on April 14, 1805. Aiken's troops destroyed a Cherokee village near present-day Greenwood.
The townspeople were inspired to develop their own civic center after watching a movie about Indian Removal in 1847. The United States government began removal of Native American tribes from their land in Georgia and North Carolina in 1849, leading to mass killings of Native Americans throughout those states. Many Creek Indians also perished during this time period as well. In reaction to these events, many residents of nearby towns banded together to form a committee to help relocate the tribe's members southward into new lands designated for white people only under Congress' orders known as "The Trail of Tears."
On December 12, 1850, President Millard Fillmore signed Executive Order No. 9394 which ordered all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River removed from their homes without any compensation or opportunity for residency or resettlement; this order sparked off what is now known as Indian Removal Crisis (1851-1853). As more than one million Native Americans were forcibly transported across America between 1850 and 1865 - often with little food or shelter - most died aboard steamboats Paramaribo and Atlanta due to disease, heatstroke, drowning or combat with Ulysses S Grant's army at Chickamauga Battlefield (September 15-20 1864). Many others fell victim to forced labor on Southern railroadroads building miles long stockades called "Waco Walls" along the Mexican border looking out for possible Indian raids; some forty thousand men women and children lost their lives doing such work during that time period alone. In response to these tragedies several organizations were formed including Amnesty International (1910), Presbyterian Church USA (1912), National Congress of Black Women (1915), African American Historical Commission (1920), Friends Committee on Civil Rights (1952) - all working towards social justice through education and activism within local communities across America.
In 1865 when Union General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following three days of battle with Confederate General Joseph Johnston his army attacked nearby Fort Sumter which resulted in over one hundred deaths.
On July 9th 1880 Greenwood’s Board announced plans for annexation by Columbia County – making it one stop along what would be called “the Dorchester Corridor†connecting Charleston with Mobile – but approval never came before county commissioners could be elected.
As early as 1889 plans had been put forward by Mayor John Prentice for erection of a public warehouse on Main Street opposite present day City Hall which would have included housing for citizens and employees alike; however development never took place because businessman Julius Gibbs moved into City Hall instead.

The early coffee industry in the United States was founded by Dutch Coffee Planters in 1695. The first African American to work in the coffee industry was Tom Peevey, who worked at a mill run by Nicholas Petronelli and John Jacob Astor. By 1790, over one thousand slaves were working in the coffee fields of America. In 1834, an Act of Congress established the United States Coffee Company as the first commercial enterprise organized for the production and marketing of cold-pressed coffee. The company grew rapidly and by 1857 it had become one of the largest U.S. consumer goods companies with a global presence. In 1886, John Densmore became president and CEO of United States Coffee Company and decided to divest his shares in its parent company Chase Manhattan Bank into separate public companies so that he could continue to lead United States Coffee from his own Floorplan office on Madison Avenue in New York City. Densmore’s vision for United States Coffee spanned forty years and during that time it accomplished great things such as creating world-renowned brands like Peet’s Tea & Coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts Doughnuts, KFC restaurants, Starbucks cafes, Rainforest Cafe restaurants throughout North America and many others worldwide. Throughout its history there has been much debate surrounding tactical coffee; some argue that it is not actually coffee but rather a kind of tea made from different beans which is then boiled down into a hot drinkable form; however this theory does not appear to hold up to scientific scrutiny either as all teas have unique chemical composition when brewed under specific conditions (Forbes 1999). There are three main types of coffee: blackstrap, Robusta,and Java (Bennett et al 2000). Blackstrapcoffee is light brown with a strong flavor profile while Robusta coffeeproperties can vary greatly depending on their processing methods including roasting or grinding (Michele 2007). Java coffees are green with a sweet flavor profile which originates from Sumatra Indonesia where this species grows (Hendrickson 2002). All bean coffees contain caffeine although its levels can vary greatly based on what type of bean it is (Bennett et al 2000). Greenwood became a center of trade and industry in the antebellum South. The town had a population of about 10,000 people by 1840. During the Reconstruction Era (1868-77), Greenwood became known as one of the most active black towns in America. It struggled during this time with racial discrimination and poverty. In 1865, Greenwood voted to secede from South Carolina and become an independent republic called Greeneville. This event is commemorated through the city's annual "Sale celebrating Sovereignty over All" parade which takes place on September 15th each year. Since its establishment, Greenwood has been home to several professional athletes including Clemson Tigers running back Cusey Owens and former NBA player Julius Erving.
