Greenwood is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. Greenwood is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by John Greenwood and others as a summer trading post on the west side of the Palmetto River. It became an important coal and lumber town during the 19th century due to its location near major transportation routes. Greenwood was also known for its annual "Festival of Trees" which features live music, pumpkin picking, and other festivities. After World War II, Greenwood experienced rapid growth as it became an agricultural center with significant production of cotton and other crops. However, this prosperity faded during the economic recession of 2007-2009. In 2012, Greenwood mayor Artur Davis proposed changes to ordinances that would make it more difficult for immigrants to become citizens and vote in local elections. The proposal sparked protests from residents who felt they were being targeted because of their ethnicity or religion.

Greenwood is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the most populous municipality in Spartanburg County and it has been designated as the cultural and economic center for the county by both local government officials and business leaders. The first white settlers to inhabit what is now Greenwood arrived in 1792 during the French and Indian War when Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson founded a small post on an unoccupied tract of land near present-day Greenville. Wilkinson named his new settlement after General Sir Edmund Greenwood, who had led British forces against France in North America. In 1824, two years after Jasper Aiken was elected sheriff of Spartanburg County, he recommended that Greenwood be named one of his five "seat[s] or districts" within the newly formed county seat system. On December 12, 1824, Aiken submitted a petition to the Florida Legislature setting forth why Greenwood should be made a seat within Spartanburg County: "the surrounding country abounds with minerals valuable to this State . . . there are numerous villages and towns in this vicinity which have shown themselves so friendly towards our people that we think it proper they should share equally in all public benefits incident to our county." The legislature approved Aiken's recommendation on January 5, 1825; accordingly, Greenwood became an official county seat on November 3 of that year. Greenwood experienced rapid growth from its humble beginnings as a rural community into an important agricultural center during Reconstruction era South Carolina. In 1870 alone, greengrocers opened up shop in Greenwood selling groceries directly to residents rather than through local merchants; carpet milling began operations here in 1875; automobile manufacturing commenced operations here in 1908; textile mills were established here beginning around 1914; agriculture continued to dominate social life throughout these years but declined thereafter until becoming negligible by 2000; however some notable businesses still remain active such as JBL Enterprises which produces soundbars for recreational vehicles and DJI Phantom 4 drones domestically and internationally; G&G Rentals which rents out bicyclesforthe general public online as well as specializesinthesportsof golfingand tennis
Greenwood was founded in 1814 by Captain John Greenwood and his wife Sarah. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi. The first school in Greenwood was built on the site of present day Statehouse Square in 1857. In 1865, Greenwood became the county seat of Pickens County; but it moved to Columbia in 1889 when that county was created from parts of Pickens and Union counties.
