Greenwood is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It is located on the banks of the Broad River and has a population of around 1,600 people. The Greenwood ZIP code is 29401. Greenwood was founded in 1835 by white settlers as an agricultural settlement on the edge of what is now Spartanburg County. The community grew rapidly during the 1800s as Methodists and Baptists migrated to Greenwood from nearby towns such as Columbia and Greenville. In 1850, Greenwood became a village when it annexed neighboring Sparta. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army attempted to move into South Carolina from North Carolina through Greenwood on their way to Camden. A skirmish occurred near Greenwood while these forces were passing through, resulting in two dead Union soldiers and four wounded Confederates. This event helped solidify support for Confederate efforts in South Carolina and led to several raids against Union civilians by Confederate forces over the next few years. The town changed hands several times during the mid-19th century until it was acquired by John Denton Hardee in 1887; he began developing Greenwood into a prosperous agricultural center with large plantations that yielded major crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans, and peanuts. In 1903, Hardee donated land adjacent to his plantation for use as a public square; this area became known as "Denton Square". Hardee died in 1925 but his son John Denton Hardee Jr., who succeeded him, continued developing the town into one of its most successful communities during the 20th century. During World War II, Greenwood served as an airfield for United StatesAAF bomber missions against German targets in Northern Africa; many of these planes were shot down over Germany at or near Greenwood Village Airport (GVD). After World War II ended and southern African development resumed under new leadership including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India, GVD reopened and became an important commercial center again until it closed operations briefly in 1984 due to budget cuts caused by recessionary trends throughout much of south African society then being transitioning towards majority first language English standardization within local government structures which had been taking place since white minority rule ended circa 1960s & 1970s%. The first white to come to Greenwood was Jonathan Green who built a cabin in 1795. The first store was established in 1812 and the first post office was established in 1816. Greenwood is the only municipality in South Carolina with a charter from the United States Constitution and has since been known as an important center for education and business opportunities. The history of Greenwood can be traced back to when Native American people were living here before European exploration began. In 1795, Jonathan Green built his cabin near present-day Greenwood while he explored what would become Pickens County. He may have been inspired by British explorer James Cook who had also landed in this area during his travels around 1696-97. For many years, Green cultivated crops near his cabin while he awaited more permanent housing developments that would eventually be constructed outside of town limits today. In 1812, Andrew White founded White’s Stores which served as early retail centers for residents of both Pickens County and nearby Connersville Village until it closed its doors several years later due to financial difficulties caused by competition from larger stores within easy driving distance of both cities respectively. At that time, local farmers took up farming instead of shopping at White’s Stores because they could get access to better prices for goods available closer at hand than through traveling far away to purchase items like cloth or books that were sold there only rarely or not at all year-round due to seasonal fluctuations in availability outside urban areas at that time).
