Greenville was founded in 1785 by white men who named it for the "green forest" that lay to the north. The first white settlers arrived in small groups and until the early 1800s, there was no permanent population of blacks in Greenville. However, beginning in the 1820s, black refugees from neighboring states began moving into Greenville to escape racial discrimination. By 1830, African Americans constituted about 10 percent of Greenville's population. Black churches were established soon after and grew steadily during the next decade as a result of this influx of people of color. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), African Americans were able to enjoy some limited civil rights but they were still considered second-class citizens throughout most of South Carolina. In 1879, however, Governor John C. Brevard granted voting rights to all black residents of South Carolina without regard to household size or race. This watershed event helped spur economic development and create an increasingly integrated society within South Carolina after centuries of segregation.
