Greenville is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,773 at the 2010 census. Greenville is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The surrounding counties are Anderson and Richland. The first European to visit what is now Greenville was Captain John Smith on April 7, 1686 when he and his men came across the Yadkin River from North Carolina looking for a new land route to find an escape from English rule. He named the area "New Bern" after his home town in England. In 1748 General James Oglethorpe discovered valuable saltpeter mines here and began developing this region into one of the most important cotton plantations in America. The first store in what is now Greenville was established by Fayette Moultrie in 1811 on Tryon Street north of downtown. In 1827, Chancellor Samuel Chase donated land east of Tryon Street for a public school system that still uses that name today as well as other education institutions such as Clemson University and South Carolina State University. In 1915, Mrs. Florence Kelley organized a knitting circle to improve her homespun clothing line which she called "Kelley's Knitting House." That same year soldiers from World War I arrived at Camp Greene and set up shop near the present day city limits while they were training here; their barracks remain extant today within walking distance of many businesses located within central business district (CBD) boundaries today including banks and restaurants etc.. Greenville is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 46,529 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and was founded on December 5, 1795 by John Green and his brother Nicholas Green. The city was named for General James Green who had fought in the American Revolution. The city's history goes back to its founding by John Green and his brother Nicholas Green. Prior to that, it was part of Cherokee Nation until 1815 when it became part of South Carolina. On December 5th, 1795, during the Revolutionary War against British troops led by General James Green, the two brothers founded Greenville with 4000 inhabitants. In 1824, due to land issues within Spartanburg County and increased competition from Charleston as a result of the construction of Union Pacific Railroad through the area (the first railroad route through Spartanburg County),Greenville became an incorporated town with a population of 30 people on November 15th 1850. The growth in business and population kept pace with growing numbers until 1861 when Union troops burned down all downtown businesses including what remain today’s State Capitol building which would later become known as SC State House Annex #2 or simply “The Annex” due to its location at 12 W Broad Street within walking distance of both City Hall and Governmental buildings across Broad Street). At that point things began to change as Confederate forces initially retreated before burning everything they encountered in order to protect their munitions supply lines rather than surrendering them like many other commanders did (See also: Battle of Palmetto Bay). From 1830 until about 1900 there were few brick buildings constructed throughout most parts due mainly because regulation at that time required country stores/laboratories be built outdoors which made site availability especially difficult for small towns/villages located along rivers etc.). However starting around 1900 Potters Ferry Road (now Main Street) started becoming an important transportation corridor connecting different portions of town giving rise to more substantial brick buildings being built along said road such as Masonic Temple & Post Office Building now occupied by Lindt Chocolate Factory Incorporated). Additionally various schools such as Agricultural School Of Arts And Science opened up during these years including Clemson Agricultural College now Clemson University which traces its roots back even further dating back prehistory via former Cherokee Nation student Samuel Chamberlain who attended Clemson between 1847 - 1862 After studying Mechanical Engineering he moved southward establishing himself in Greensville where he practiced law until his death...
