After Reconstruction ended, many businesses closed or changed hands due to competition from larger cities such as Savannah and Atlanta; however, few people left town permanently because there were no permanent jobs available in cotton country during this time period. After World War II, Growth accelerated after nearby Greenwood became a manufacturing city with large factories such as DuPont Corporation expanding their operations into much of South Carolina following wartime shortages of materials secured through purchasing power lost in Europe during World War IIs collapse; however much like other Southern towns throughout much of America during this period there wasn't any widespread grass roots activism led by citizens against developers’ interests until more recently following Hurricane Katrina which destroyed most of New Orleans making it clear that hurricanes are not just natural disasters but can also be destructive forces if not prepared for them - something that many residents here have been living experience firsthand for decades now! Census data shows that although per capita income has decreased over recent years – especially since 2008 – joblessness rates have remained low due largely to heavy industry relocation out-of-state post-Katrina; furthermore housing prices have barely budged given current market conditions – something which may finally begin deteriorating soon too! By all accounts though things are slowly starting to change: Downtown continues to grow with momentum while residential areas around it start seeing modest gentrification (albeit often without any official designation); while business districts such as Main Street continue growing albeit slowly given present economic conditions
