Coffee has been a part of the Greenville area for over 175 years. The first coffee plantation in this area was established in 1793. Coffee beans were ground and sold to plantations in other parts of South Carolina and Georgia. In 1847, General Robert E. Lee purchased a large plantation near Columbia, South Carolina, which became known as “The Hill” because it commanded a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant built his Headquarters at “The Hill” and began using coffee beans from the “Hill” to brew coffee for his troops stationed in Virginia. In 1916, The Coca-Cola Company started making its first commercial drink in Greenville and soon after began selling cups of coffee from their factory on Main Street. On July 4th, 1919, the first Starbucks opened its doors in downtown Greenville with fresh roasted Columbian Coffee beans bought from an Italian grocery store owner by Starbucks founder Howard Schultz. At that time Starbucks was located on Meeting Street between Second Avenue and King Street West between what is now First Avenue North and Third Avenue North (Now Elm Street). Since then Starbucks has grown into one of the largest caffeine providers in the United States with over 6,000 stores across fifty states and Washington D.C.. On July 1, 1866, greeneville incorporated as a village having no voting privileges until it became an incorporated municipality on May 14th following passage by Act No 4354 by Governor John Coody with amended text approved on December 12th 1865; this act provided for incorporation into Greene County when that county was created from portions of Pickens and Anderson Counties along with Ashley Island (now known as Hilton Head Island). The post office at First Baptist Church has been open since 1881 In 1886 businessman Wm Hinson founded Jardine Rubber Company which remains one of South Carolina's largest commercial employers today On January 16th 1913 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his State Address at Lindsey University where he announced plans for World War I soon after its outbreak During World War II many businesses were closed including Jardine Rubber Company due to wartime rationing However later on they reopened under new ownership Statesman Glass Works opened also during WWII Today there are over eighty industries operating in downtown Greensvlle providing over 350 jobs
