The United States Army was founded in 1775, and has been present in South Carolina since the Revolutionary War. The first U.S. military forces arrived in South Carolina in 1801, and the state’s army was established on July 4, 1828. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, and the Union Army took control of South Carolina. The military presence in South Carolina continued until 1865 when all Confederate troops were ordered to leave the state. Throughout its history, the United States Army has made a large donation to various institutions across Greenville County including: John Coker School; Avery Baptist Church; Greenville Technical College; and Morehouse College. This donations have helped make these places important cultural landmarks within our community today. For example, John Coker School is now home to over 1,000 students from local elementary schools as well as middle school and high school students who attend nearby Avery Baptist Church which also houses a library with over 100 thousand items including books, magazines, newspapers, etc., dating back to 1778! One of the most well-known gifts that the United StatesArmy has made to Greenville County is their Camp Aiken facility known locally as “The Alamo” which opened in 1957 adjacent to Avery Baptist Church on North Main Street. It served as an encampment for American soldiers during World War II before becoming an active training ground for units deployed throughout Southeast Asia from 1950-1957 inclusive! Today it is home to more than 9500 soldiers from 107 countries across 11 branches of service! Another major gift given by the USArmy was their Camp Blanding located just outside of Greenville on Old Highway 7 near Blanding Air Force Base between 1959-1983 inclusive! This camp housed more than 3200 servicemen from 31 countries during its tenure which included many active duty deployments such as Vietnam along with numerous support functions such as motorcycle operations and airlift services! Today it remains one of only a few remaining camps operated by the USArmy stationed within reach of civilians through Joint Base Charleston National Military Airport!
