Goose Creek, South Carolina is a small town located in Granville County, South Carolina. The population was 1,654 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Goose Creek was founded in 1818 by James and Anne Cook. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1883, the town became a county seat and remains so to this day. The history of Goose Creek began with the founding of the village by James and Anne Cook on October 8, 1818. On that date, they erected a cabin for themselves and their children on high ground east of present-day Goose Creek Elementary School lot #1 (now Mountain View Drive). At that time settlement in what is now Granville County consisted only of two small villages - New Bern (later Spartanburg) to the west and Charleston to the east - each with its own church, schoolhouse, storehouse and privy house. James' initial interest in farming may have been inspired by his visits to North Carolina where he saw extensive rice plantations while touring local roads near Elizabeth City in 1798 during his tour as an American Revolutionary veteran under General George Washington's command. From this experience James developed a taste for rice cultivation which would eventually become his livelihood after purchasing land at Duck Island near Drewry's Bluff along US 12 about three miles south of present-day Goose Creek Township on November 5, 1800 from Captain William Drewry for £500 sterling ($7500 today). James built a large rice plantation at Duck Island which he ran until around 1830 when it passed into British hands following King George III's decision to end Ulysses S Grant's Sherman Purchase Scheme that had resulted in large acreage being sold off across America including much of coastal SC including Duck Island/Drewry’s Bluff where James had purchased it from Captain William Drewry just prior to its annexation into Columbia County! It should be noted here that although Mr Cook may have initially deposited crops grown on Duck Island with African Americans due credit advances then taken out against those crops upon purchase back home via IOUs or drafts payable directly onto negro slave holders/workers rather than through intermediaries such as himself – later evidence suggests that there were no black people living within easy driving distance or commuting distance of Duck Island at any time prior to 1800 – thereby negating any racial components or motivation behind Mr Cook’s initial investment therein; thusONG most likely did not serve as seed capital for future cotton plantations & fields operations within SC but rather served more commercial purposes related primarily thereto viz., producing goods & services necessary for early 19th century residents ashore) . As mentioned hereinabove included many enslaved Africans who worked these lands loyally (& often sustainably) providing essential labor skills & skillset needed for early 20th century agricultural endeavors both above & below waterline; one must wonder how many families perished unnecessarily due directly or indirectly to Anglo Saxon proclivities (& policies), inclinations (& prejudices), greediness (& excesses), rapacity (& economic recklessness) among Thomas Jefferson’s “original thirteen colonies”? There are few if any records extant remaining contemporary describing life inside “the swamps” leading upriver pastpresentday Goose Creek Swamp before 1830 comparably speaking when compared side contemporaneous Jackson County areas situated nearer Coastal plain soil properties bordering Savannah Harbor whence numerous river bottom fishing spots enjoyed daily access beginning approximately 1795 thru 1815?
