Goose Creek is a town in Greenville County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in Goose Creek was James Hargrave who arrived in 1786 and named it after his family's property near present day Duckworth. The town began as a small cluster of log huts on the banks of the Sweetwater River. By 1820, the population had increased to 100 people and by 1825 they had built their first schoolhouse and churches. In 1827, George Washington Carver landed at Mullica Hill on the Pedee River and began to cultivate rice near Goose Creek. This started what would be known as Carver Country. Rice production continued until about 1912 when fertilizer prices became too high for most farmers to afford to use rice for their crops. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army from around Charleston into Greenville County and established a base of operations at Pelham Bayou where he planned to attack Mobile Bay Colony under General Andrew Jackson. On December 4th of that year, Forrest's forces attacked Goose Creek but were repulsed with heavy losses by local militia led by Captain John Dickson (later Mayor of Greenwood). After this defeat, Forrest retreated back upriver towards Glasgow Landing where he left his supplies behind before moving on again on December 13th with an estimated 20,000 men towards Mobile Bay Colony. However , on December 16th while Forrest was resting his troops outside of town limits at Duckworth Meadows Massacre Site located just north of today's Goose Creek Bridge across Duckworth River (now part of US 74), four Confederate soldiers ambushed him resulting in three dead including captain Dickson; two more died from wounds soon after from retreating Confederate forces returning upstream towards Glasgow Landing only to find friendly Union militiamen waiting for them within minutes upon reaching town limits- ending what is now considered one of the largest cavalry engagements in American history up until then! After this event which has been called "the turning point" in south carolina history due both to its involvement & Morrison's victory over Forrest elsewhere that same year also known as "The Battle For State College", many settlers decided not to return back home due to political reasons such as anger over possible compensation offered by Jackson or other leaders following this battle including Governor Francis Pickens himself although some did do so such as David Beattie who settled down around Gaffney Road just south of present day Pinehurst Drive right outside current day Pee Dee Medical Center! Some interesting facts about Goose Creek include that it is one Of Only Four Places In America To Have A Post Office Named After A Person Who Was Killed In Action!!! Another Interestingfact About Goosecreek Is That It Has Been Referred To As "The Town That Time Forgot" Which Came About Due To Many People Living There Until They moved Away Or Became Old And forgot About It!!
