The community is located on the banks of the Ashe River just east of Spartanburg. The name comes from an early settler, James Gentry Goose, who named his creek "Goose Creek" after some geese that he saw along the stream. The first settlers in Goose Creek were Quakers who arrived in 1795 and built a log cabin on what is now Duck Pond Road. A few years later they traveled to England and returned with a group of twelve families, including four children of Dr. John Jayadeva Ayres. They began farming and soon had two hogs (one white and one black) to sell for goods they produced themselves or bought from others in surrounding counties. In 1814 they built another cabin on present day Duck Pond Road- this time called "Jayadeva". Over time other families moved into Goose Creek including those from nearby Mount Pleasant and won distinction as pioneers such as Ebenezer Bradford (1792-1868), Elijah White (1800-1872), Jonas McNickle (1804-1875), Edward Everett Hale (1827-1902), Nathan Bedford Forrest III (1875-1941), Wofford Cobbett IV (census date unknown) and Solomon Stono Sr.(?-1910). By 1835 all but two of the earlier pioneer families had departed for various reasons; most likely due to advancing age or changes within their social circles which had estranged them from their initial progressive values and goals. In 1837 James Gentry Goosen moved his family to Goose Creek from Mount Pleasant where he had been farm superintendent for three years previous; he named his creek after some geese that he saw along its banks while walking his horse overgrown nearpresent day Duck Pond Rd.. Goose Creek is located on the banks of the Duck River, about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Spartanburg and 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Greenville. The first settlers in Goose Creek were men named Madden and McNeely. In 1830, they built a cabin on what is now Main Street. They were followed by others who settled here over the next few years. By 1833, there were eight families living in Goose Creek. In 1835, when South Carolina became a state, Goose Creek was incorporated as a village. The first mayor was James Auldsberry. At that time, there were only two stores and one school in the village—all operated by residents or their parents until 1860 when an addition to the village led to the construction of a store and post office building on Main Street which still stands today (). In 1861, South Carolina allowed African Americans to vote for the first time; this made Goose Creek one of the early black towns in South Carolina. Over time, however, many African Americans moved away from Goose creek due to racist policies maintained by white people and their government officials. The town experienced several vicissitudes during Reconstruction: it lost its charter as part of General Robert E Lee's army during his raid into eastern South Carolina; it lost its status as an election precinct after Reconstruction ended; it briefly regained its charter but then fell back into obscurity; finally it re-emerged as an independent municipality following civil rights advances throughout 1960s through 1970s A new courthouse was built in 1912 on land donated by local farmer John Witherspoon (). It served as both courthouse and jail until 1951 when Spartanburg County erected its own courthouse on Main Street across from library).
