Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,597 at the 2010 census. The name Goose Creek comes from the Potomac River which flows through the town. The first known permanent settler in Goose Creek was James Wofford who arrived in 1786. In 1827, Colonel John Cushing organized and led an expedition to explore the area for new land grants. He discovered and named a creek after General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law, Major General Joseph Hooker. In 1851, Aiken County was created from parts of Spartanburg and Greenville counties and included part of Goose Creek Township within it. In 1857, all of Spartanburg County except for part of Goose Creek Township were combined with Union County to form that county. In 1870, Judge Augustus Pemberton bought 640 acres (2 km²) east of town on State Route 8 and donated it to the town as open land for settlement by men over 21 years old without regard to sex or race. On December 12, 1870, Mayor Elisha Goodsell proclamation announced that Goose Creek had attained its present size when he stated "the site selected by me when I first surveyed this township seems like one small piece out of many thousands found throughout this section." One reason why Goose Creek became so successful as a community was its location near two major rivers: the Potomac River to the north and the Santee River to the south. These waterways allowed goods brought downriver by boat or train to be transported directly into town without having to travel through more remote areas such as Greenville or Spartanburg Counties which were then filled with farmers waiting for shipment upriver. This system continued until about 1900 when railroad transportation became available from Jacksonville due north which made commuting into town much easier than ever before

The town has two hospitals – one operated by Presbyterian Hospital Group and another by Baptist HealthSouth Carolina – as well as nine schools (grades Pre-K through 12), two churches (Church of God Scientist and First Baptist), four boat launch ramps, two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company & Citizens Bank) and three hotels (Best Western Plus Store, Hali Hai Resort & Marina Resort Coastal Hotel & Suites, Embassy Suites). Today, Goose Creek is a small but vibrant community with an active economy based primarily on agriculture/livestock production; manufacturing; service businesses; tourism; retail/retail trade; transportation services; health care services; education institutions: one high school (grades Pre-K to 12); one college preparatory school (Greenville Technical College); one comprehensive training center for nursing professionals (National Nurses United Training Center); six professional wrestling matches have been held there over the years including World Wrestling Entertainment's WrestleMania XXVIII which took place on April 6th–8th 2006 headlined by Hulk Hogan vs Triple H
In 1811, the first white man to set foot on Goose Creek was James Robertson. He named it after his home in Scotland, which he had seen while traveling through that country. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1816, when John C. Williamson founded a gristmill and sawmill on the creek. By 1830, the creek contained about fifty houses and three mills. In 1842, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line from Greenville to Charleston via Goose Creek. The railroad made Goose Creek an important transportation corridor and brought more people and goods to the area. In 1951, South Carolina passed a law authorizing development of special areas along Goose Creek for scientific research purposes. Since then, Goose Creek has been host to many scientific studies and research projects.
