Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,972 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg metropolitan area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1837 and named for Goose Creek, a small stream located east of the town. The first post office in Goose Creek was established on February 14, 1837. The present day downtown area was built up around this time. One of the earliest businesses in Goose Creek was a blacksmith shop operated by John Easley and his son-in-law James Milner. In 1841, another store opened by Jno Coker and His Sons which served as the nucleus of what became known as "The Block". In 1865, Aiken County commissioners decided to move south from their original location on the edge of Spartanburg County to establish itself near Greer and within sight of Fort Sumter. They organized a committee to select an appropriate site for their new county seat and chose Goose Creek as it would be close to both places and provide easy access to transportation coming into Spartanburg County from other counties. By 1870, over 2,000 people lived in Goose Creek with many businesses clustered around Second Street between Main and Cedar Streets northwest of town square. At that time there were no schools or public services available within walking distance so residents had to rely on carts drawn by horses or wagons for milk delivery from nearby farms or for visiting friends and family during daylight hours only; most activities were conducted after dark when all lights were turned off except for those belonging to some important families who used candles or oil lamps instead of electricity because they could afford it. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many African Americans migrated westward due to offers made by Confederate Generals such as Jubal Early offering them land grants in return for service during the war effort; many local freedmen also moved into Goose Creek because it remained open solelyto whites until after Reconstruction ended in 1865 when all black citizens were automatically reclassified as white under state law; however some blacks continued living among their former Southern plantation owners untilafter World War II when integration began officially acrossracial lines throughout South Carolina
