Goose Creek is a small town in Gaston County, South Carolina. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Originally called "Gastonia," the town was renamed for General David G. Goose in 1868. He had been a colonel in the Confederate army during the American Civil War and was visiting South Carolina when he heard about its railroad facilities and decided to move there. The first store was built here in 1875, and by 1902 all of Gastonia had been laid out with streets named after Governors of South Carolina: James A. McDowell (1876-83), John Clements (1885-92), William Halsey (1898-1901), George Meredith (1902-04), Alfred Moultrie (1900-02). The community grew rapidly from its early days as a small frontier village until it reached its peak around 1940 when it had an estimated population of 4,000 people. However, by 1960 Goose Creek's population had fallen to 1,752 people and by 2000 it still constituted only 0.1% of Gaston County's total population

Goose Creek is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Goose Creek were Scots-Irish tenant farmers who arrived during the 18th century and 1840s. The town was founded on December 12, 1852 by James Denton Crouch and others from nearby Laurens as a farmstead for white settlers to purchase land in what is now Richland County. After two years of construction, the first post office was established in Goose Creek on January 7, 1854. The name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "place where geese gather." During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Goose Creek served as a Union garrison on the frontier between Beaufort and Sumter counties. On April 25, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell Reynolds ordered his forces to cross over into Union territory near what is now Columbia City and march upriver to attack Fort Sumter – an event that became known as Ewell's Raid. A detachment of Confederate cavalry under Captain John Troup attacked Goose Creek while most of the rest of Reynolds' force took refuge inside Fort Moultrie; three men were killed and six taken prisoner before they surrendered on April 26 at sunset. Becauseof this engagement (and other events leading up to it), Duck River Bridge (now Coles County Road 502) was built over Duck River just east of town in order to provide easier access for troops moving upstream through Goose Creek Valley towards fortifications at Charleston Harbor. In 1863–64 Major General Leonidas Polk visited Goose Creek and complimented its farmers upon their impressive crop yields; he also recommended that more land be acquired for agricultural purposes around the town so that it could become self-sufficient with limited assistance from neighboring towns such as Laurens or Greenville. In 1865–66 local builders began installing streetlights throughout town after residents discovered that dark evenings provided ideal conditions for robbers to rob farms unannounced during agricultural season.—Today many streets in downtown are still lit up at night thanks to public works projects initiated by Mayor Glen Bowers following Hurricane Florence damage done in 2017.—
