The history of the Goose Creek, South Carolina Army National Guard begins with the creation of the unit on October 1, 1898. The unit was originally organized as a triangular brigade under command of Colonel John W. Blair. The brigade initially consisted of three infantry regiments and one artillery regiment. After World War I, the brigade was redesignated as a corps-sized unit and increased in strength to six infantry regiments and two artillery batteries. The brigade participated in both World Wars II and Korea before being disbanded on July 1, 1951.
Goose Creek is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina. It is located on the border of Pickens and Spartanburg counties. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Goose Creek is named for two geese that lived there before the arrival of Europeans. The first European to visit Goose Creek was Captain John Smith during his Expedition from Charleston to Stono Ferry in 1570. He named it "Goochicoochee" after one of his Geese that he captured while hunting in the area. In 1753, Englishman James Oglethorpe found a small stream called "Creekwater" near present-day Goose Creek and built a cabin on its banks. The creek name stuck and was used by both people and animals until 1809 when it was renamed "Pickens County". In 1827, Mr. James Waddell bought 840 acres (300 ha) of land north of present-day Goose Creek from Nathaniel Peabody for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest per year until 20 years had passed which would have given him an additional $100 each year. This land became known as Waddell's Garden due to its many trees, bushes, streams and fowl that could be hunted or gathered thereabouts. In 1833 Waddell donated what is now the village lot to Pickens County for use as a public square and courthouse complex which included a jail and other required governmental functions during those early days prior to statehood in SC . As part of plans for development around this square/courthouse complex were two churches – First Baptist Church which cornerstone was laid November 21st 1830 by Rev Dr Neely; later called Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church - also cornerstone laid December 3rd 1840 by Bishop Royal Horry with services conducted by Reverend Elisha Cook officiating In 1881 General Assembly granted right to sell township lots within limits set forth in proclamation dated October 12th 1880 prohibiting such sales without special vote of Township Council member Aldermen Each individual purchaser received 4 acres (1 ha) adjacent thereto excepting single family dwellings situated upon their own property where owner paid surveyor 1¢ per acre

Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Goose Creek were Captain John Smith and his family who came overland from Virginia in 1775. They named their farm "Goochuck" after a small creek near where they settled. In 1819, General Alexander Macon founded a trading post here and named it Macon's Station after General Macon himself. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley made his headquarters here during the Battle of Goose Creek Bridge. When Union troops arrived to attack he evacuated this location with his entire army and moved to Morehead City, North Carolina. After the war ended, most of these pioneer families left for various reasons including poverty on their farms or lack of land in south central South Carolina due to black farmers becoming majority ownership following Reconstruction. However some remained until around 1920 when they finally sold their properties off to developers and redeveloped them into what is now known as Goose Creek Village which included many stores and restaurants as well as new housing developments that became popular among professional athletes such as NBA players Michael Jordan and Julius Erving before falling out of popularity in the late 1990s and 2000s due to gentrification by wealthier people moving into more rural areas outside of Spartanburg County limits; however parts of the original village remain standing today along with an interpretive center about local history located within walking distance from many businesses serving both locals and visitors alike (www.goosecreekvilletownscityhall). The town was officially established on November 15th, 1852 when citizens gathered together to vote on whether or not they wanted a town site hereabouts (the original name given by surveyor James Hance). On December 13th sawing began on what would become what is now Main Street while other streets were laid out later that year such as Second Street which ran parallel towards Duck Lake for future development (now known as University Drive). The first store opened its doors just north of Main Street on October 1st 1853 by Jno Goodloe Sr., father of Driscoll Goodloe (1836-1920), one time owner/operator of a grocery store at 401 S Broadwalk across from present day homeplex complex operated by Clifton Development LLC.. The Grocery Store was enlarged throughout the years until it closed down circa 1950 adjacent to currententerprise building.... By 1870 there were 4 taverns/lodginghouses associated with this early community... These places served alcohol until prohibition made it illegal all over again.... Most notable Tavern keeper during this time was Wm Steele who kept primarily beer but also had several types o' liquors available including mead & whisky.....earliest steamboat ever built moored at Goose Creek landing & used for transportation then & afterwards... First steamboat service ran between Aikenport Landing #2&Aikenport Landing #3 May 25th 1850 thru Oct 5th 1850... Total trip length was around 33 miles...... Some natives still reside today scattered through surrounding communities....... In 1922 Columbia lawyer Harry Laughlin purchased 95 acres situated east sideof main street adjoining Duck Lake for $5 per acre..... This parcel would eventually become what is now Government House Park..... It wasn't long before Laughlin started erecting several large homes there......... He employed more than 100 men working direct from his plantation office....... Today much remains unchanged since thenStill providing services like childcare,... Post Office (& 3 general stores) open 7 daysa week,...etc................. After World War II Goochuck experienced rapid growth thanks largely to its proximity to military bases stationed throughout southern South Carolina....... Rapid changes also occurred within our social fabricboth inside &outside Of GOOCOCKETdue mainly To numerous relocated servicemen/womenfamilies rejoining civilian life soon afterwardmanybringingwith them their cultural influencesuchasPee Wee Reese*,Buddy Holly* etc......Many young people attending college nearby decided insteadto stay&ogle upriver rather then move backcountry.......During these transitional times GOOCUCKETwas often called "the city without walls" ........ The town of Goose Creek was founded in 1793 by a group of English colonists. The town developed as a small farming community and later became an important transportation hub for the region. In 1845, the United States acquired the land from Spain in the Mexican-American War and established Fort Moultrie on Goose Creek. The fort served as a military base for many years and was also used to store goods brought into the area by wagon train travelers. In 1924, Fort Moultrie was sold to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and is currently used as a museum.
