The United States Army was first deployed to South Carolina in 1861. The 1st Infantry Regiment, under the command of General Winfield Scott, was ordered to garrison Fort Sumter. The regiment and its attached artillery batteries were mustered into service on December 12 of that year. By February 1862, the regiment had been redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment and was transferred to Battery A, 1st Artillery Battalion, for duty at Cedar Shoals Ferry bridge. On March 6th, Confederate forces attacked battery A and it lost six officers and 94 men killed or wounded. After the battle, battery A's commanding officer reported that "the loss cannot be greatly exaggerated" because of Confederate gunfire that "shot through our ranks like fireflies". Aftermath of the battle caused some residents in Goose Creek to grow alarmed over Confederate troop movements near their town. On April 11th Garrison Commander General Scott reported that all Union troops had withdrawn from South Carolina effective immediately due to heavy rains which had flooded many bridges and made travel difficult across rivers. Withdrawal effectively ended any possibility of a Union victory in South Carolina during the Peninsula Campaigns; however Union casualties are not known specifically since they are not listed in contemporaneous reports.

Goose Creek is a small town on the banks of the Kiawah River in central South Carolina. The population was 1,863 as of the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. According to legend, the first white person to live in Goose Creek was James Fenton, who settled there in 1795. He built a cabin and named it after his home at Cane Bottom Farm in North Carolina. Over time, other families also moved into Goose Creek and it became a busy community with stores, churches, schools and farms. In 1884, a group of settlers from Georgia arrived in Goose Creek and founded an agricultural settlement called Fairview Springs. They continued to live there until their Removal by the United States government during the 1830s. The townspeople were very friendly to African Americans and they opened up businesses for them including a grocery store and carpenter shop. However, this period also saw some tension between whites and African Americans over housing opportunities, education opportunities and job security. Eventually these tensions boiled over into violence which led to several arrests and property damage across the community. The town reached its peak around World War II when many local men served in the military or worked on war production projects abroad. The population then began to decline as many residents left for better jobs or other places within South Carolina or outside of America during this time period. However, thanks to strong economic development efforts over the years by both locals and outsiders alike, Goose Creek has since begunto experience resurgence growth again – reaching 2,000 residents as of 2017!

Goose Creek is a town in western South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Goose Creek were two families who arrived from Massachusetts in 1793. The name "Goose Creek" was given to them by one of their owners because he found geese on their property during his hunting trips near the creek. The first post office was established in 1826 and the name changed to Goose Creek in 1868. In 1885, the Post Office Department moved from Columbia to Goose Creek and it remained there until it relocated to Charlotte in 1907. Goochuck Township was organized on December 1, 1907 and became a part ofCharlotte upon its incorporation as a city on May 15, 1928. After World War II, many residents chose to move away from downtownCharlotte because of economic conditions and racism towards African Americans which increased after the war. However, some people decided to stay and continue working within the community despite these challenges; this continues today as an indicator of how close-knit goose creeks are today. The town of Goose Creek was platted in 1811 by James Nicholson, a surveyor for the South Carolina government. The name comes from a nearby stream called Goosecreek, which is said to have been named after a goose that nested near the town. The first permanent home in Goose Creek was built on the site of what is now the Courthouse Square. The town became an important transportation and trade center during the 19th century, and its citizens were known for their production of woolen textiles and other items. In 1868, local residents voted to become part of the new state of South Carolina. In 1886, Goose Creek became one of six towns in southcentral South Carolina incorporated as counties. The county courthouse was constructed in 1912 and remains in use today.
