Following the war Gaffeyn became one of Reconstruction South Carolina's largest towns providing homes for freedmen, African Americans (including some who had been kidnapped), immigrants from various parts of Europe and Asia (primarily Chinese), and other displaced persons as well as businesses like schools and churches. The postwar era saw growth in agriculture with new technology helping farmers increase yields while maintaining prices for consumers; however economic stability slowly eroded beginning around 1990 when manufacturing jobs moved out westward amid increased competition from multinational corporations like Monsanto."
