Gaffney has a history that goes back to 1792 when Captain James Acosta and his men were driving cattle from Fort Moultrie to Augusta on the Savannah River when they were met by Hugh Lawson Gaffney and his family. Captain Acosta purchased some of Hugh Lawson's cattle and these are still known as Gaffney's cows today. Gaffney is located in rural Spartanburg County at (34.566667, -79.333333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,811 people, 1,092 households, and 714 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,351.3 people per square mile (500.0/km²). There were 1,291 housing units at an average density of 516.1 per square mile (227.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 94% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. The first human being to live in Gaffney was John Robinson who settled there in 1792. In 1815, Colleton County was established and Gaffney became one of its initial settlements. The first school in Gaffney was built in 1827 by Mrs. Fannie Hanks and it continued to be operated until 1865 when it closed due to lack of funds. In 1854, Wofford College opened up here and many students from Gaffney came to study there over the next few years until 1861 when Confederate troops burned down the college with all their classes inside because it didn’t agree with the Confederate cause. In 1865, Union troops burned down Wofford College after finding out that some of its students hadSupport for the Confederacy while others were studying for exams related to their coursework. This event helped start a trend where colleges would close down during the American Civil War as they were not allowed by law to participate in hostilities without breaking apart into two separate entities which would then be open again under different names (i.e., Wofford University and Clemson University). As a result of this event, Gaffney lost much of its educational infrastructure but still retains many old buildings including: Griggs School (founded 1888), Methodist Episcopal Church (1899), First Presbyterian Church (1898), Blythewood BaptistChurch (1902), and George Washington High School (1968). In 1860s-1920s GNR also had post office located here
